I think we can all agree that there is no real downside to Netflix (besides the negative effect it has on our grades), and there are so many things I love about Netflix. One of my favorites is its repertoire of comedian stand up specials. It has a seemingly unlimited amount of specials that I’m slowly making my way through. I’m embarrassed to admit how many I’ve actually seen, mostly due to my procrastination habits. It’s hard to choose the top 10 I’ve seen, but here it goes.
10. Nick Offerman – American Ham
I think we all know Nick Offerman best as the loveable and grumpy Ron Swanson from Parks and Recreation, so it was a little disconcerting at first to see him make jokes as someone other than Ron, but it works. He incorporates songs, some minor nudity and hilarious jokes into his routine — but he still shares his love of bacon with his alter ego, Ron. It’s the punch line to many a joke.9. Kevin Hart – Seriously Funny
Kevin Hart is becoming increasingly well known as he moves into the acting world but, first and foremost, he is a comedian. His special on Netflix is made even more hilarious by his ridiculous facial expressions and his commitment to his delivery. You know when you watch it that something hilarious is about to happen.
8. Jim Gaffigan – Mr. Universe
Jim Gaffigan is a dominant personality in the stand up comedy community. From singing jingles for McDonalds and Hot Pockets throughout his entire show to speaking the ultimate truth about our guilty pleasures, Jim Gaffigan never fails to entertain.
7. Louis C.K. – Live at the Beacon Theater
Louis C.K. is the kind of comedian that makes you laugh mostly because he’s grumpy and hates everything. Though we all like to pretend that we’re happy, optimistic people, sometimes it feels good to just complain. Louis C.K. is a comedian who recognizes this and designed his entire routine around it. And it works.
6. Demetri Martin – Demetri Marin Live (At the Time)
Demetri Martin is unique because he strays from the typical stand up comedian routine. He doesn’t tell long, anecdotal stories that end with a funny punch line. He tells a series of one liners and corny jokes throughout his entire act and his deadpan delivery leaves you laughing every time.
5. Gary Gulman – In This Economy?
A relatively unknown comic, Gary Gulman made me laugh out loud his entire routine the first time I watched it on Netflix. His little smirk after every joke, his dissection of Bill Gates’ wealth, and his hatred for Blockbuster makes for an entertaining special that puts him at number five on this list.
4. Aziz Ansari – Dangerously Delicious
Another Parks and Rec alum, Aziz Ansari is even funnier in his stand up routines. Though he’s not preaching the infamous “treat yo’ self” line, he delivers new jokes and opinions that are just as funny. He perfectly describes the cyber black hole that we get sucked into, preaches about the frustrations of modern communication, and tells hilarious stories about his cousin Harris leading his special to make it to #4 on my list.
3. John Mulaney – New In Town
John Mulaney is gaining well-deserved recognition among the masses because he is, in fact, one of the funniest comedians I’ve ever seen. His delivery is perfect for every joke and he utilizes the anecdotal routine flawlessly. A baby faced 28 year old, he’s just self-deprecating enough to make us laugh.
2. Iliza Shlesinger  – Freezing Hot
As a female comedian, I think Iliza Shlesinger’s is unique in that she appeals to women so significantly. I’ve recommended this special to both guys and girls and I always hear the same thing. “She wasn’t that funny” from my guy friends and “that was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen” from girls. She points out girls’ obsessive love for pinterest, recognizes that girls love to talk about the weather, and calls society out on their impossible double standards for women. What else can you ask for?
1. John Mulaney – The Comeback Kid Â
I know. John Mulaney is on here twice. Once you see both his specials, you’ll understand why. I constantly quote this special to my friends which is what made it my #1 pick as best stand up special on Netflix. John Mulaney’s stories and, more importantly, his delivery of them make this special a must see. His impression of Bill Clinton, his description of college, and his breakdown of the movie Back to the Future are only a few of the highlights of this #1 special that will make you wiggle with happiness.
Now, go take a study break and check out these hilarious specials.Â
