Going to college can be a scary thing, especially when going to a huge university. I don’t know how I would’ve survived my first few semesters if it weren’t for my amazing group of friends. Now we’re almost upperclassmen and all I can think about is how thankful I am for each and every one of them.
Your college friends are the friends who have seen you at your best, your worst, your craziest, your laziest, and much more. They are the motivation you need to pull that all night-er study sesh, or when you don’t feel like partying but you go anyways to make more memories with them. College is the time in our lives where we discover things about ourselves, our emotions, and about the people we deserve to be around.
We need to sort through those fake friendships and even go through some “friendship break ups” in order to find the real ones. I’ve learned that you should never regret the fake friends being in your life, because they were there to teach you a lesson. Your real friends will never take advantage of your friendship. Find the friends who genuinely care about how your day was, and willingly go out of their way to cheer you up when you’ve had a rough one.
Here are some things that made me realize I truly struck gold with my friends:
1. We don’t judge each other.
Throughout all the tears, the mistakes, the drunken texts, and the ugly middle school pictures- we all accept one another for who we are.
2. If someone had a bad day, it’s our job to make them feel better.
In college, bad days are very common and bad weeks are even more common. But with an awesome group of girls as your support system, even the worst of days can become good days.
3. Laughing at nonsense can be the best therapy.
For some reason, everything is 100x funnier when we’re all together.
4. Friday brunch.
In our makeup from the night before, eating all the fried food and chugging water like our lives depends on it. Friday brunch is for rehashing thirsty Thursday’s bad decisions, laughing at them until we cry, and repeating the same thing next week.
5. Blowing up the group chat and actually getting responses.
Because honestly, who else cares that I have to pee in class or that I just ate a grilled cheese?
6. They are my biggest supporters.
We all come from different backgrounds and have had to overcome challenges. Even if we haven’t been through all the same things, we do our best to understand one another and help as much as we can.
7. No matter what we’re bickering about, it will blow over and turn into a funny story in no time.
“You disappeared downtown and I had to get an Uber home alone…”
“Why didn’t you tell me you were going there? I would’ve come.”
“Whatever.”
8. Boys will come and go, but girlfriends are forever.
But really, hoes before bros. We’re way more fun anyway.
9. We can be perfectly honest, but perfectly sentimental at the same time.
We all get too worked up about something that just really isn’t worth it. Thankfully, I have my friends to tell me to shut up when it’s needed. Tough love.
10. We’re all different, but we make the perfect grouping.
Our group has the one who never wants to get out of bed, the one who is always down to go out, the one who really couldn’t care less, and the one who cares a little too much. We love each other despite the flaws.
