The Six Stages After Finishing a TV Series

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

1.       Denial: There has to be more. Maybe some deleted scenes online, or a promise of a reunion? Are we sure that it didn’t get renewed for a new season? You refuse to accept that the show is truly at its end, and turn to alternate forms of the fictional universe to satisfy your needs. This could include watching deleted scenes online, fan made videos, or even reading stories about the TV series. You even download the shows soundtrack and relive the moments.

2.       Despair: Why do all good things have to come to an end!? You feel as if you have lost a close personal friend and mourn their death. You hopelessly look back on all the fun times you had with the TV show and think about the happiness it once brought you, but then you only get sadder.

3.       Withdrawal: You question what you are going to do with your life now?  Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to re-watch a few episodes. Again. Several times you catch yourself settling down for another binging session, but then realize you don’t have anything else to watch.

4.       Anger: You get angry at yourself for finishing the season/series so quickly. Why don’t you have any self control? Why did I binge watch an entire season in one weekend, knowing I had the rest of the week to get through? Why wasn’t I born into that fictional universe? Why don’t the writers know how to keep a show lasting forever? I AM FIILING A COMPLAINT.

5.       Acceptance: You realize that you have a life outside of fictional television and promise to move on. It’s been fun but it’s time to get your life together and make something of yourself! All that time you spent binge watching in the past can now be put towards doing something productive, like exercising or learning a new skill!

6.       Discovery: You happen upon a new TV series and find yourself instantly hooked. You binge watch the entirety of it within days and before you know it you’re back at stage one.
