This has been a big week for diversity in the beauty industry. Lingerie and fashion model, Ashley Graham became the first plus size model to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Edition. As a size 16 model, Graham is the largest model to be featured in the magazine, which is pretty absurd considering the average American woman is about a size 14. The magazine has notoriously depicted very homogenous and limited types of beauty so for a plus size model to be in it is revolutionary and refreshing. Hopefully this is the beginning of a very needed shift in the way our culture values the different types of beauty of different types of women. This can only happen if we start to recognize all of the women working tirelessly to break down barriers in the beauty industry.
