Greek life is one of those phases of college life that one simply can’t ignore, regardless of whether you hate it or love it. A large number of students get involved in either a fraternity or a sorority and this is the thing that is usually marked as a line of divide between them and the ones who don’t really like them. While all of this is a true, it is also a fact that all the sororities and fraternities have their own little relationship quotient between each other. Either one might not like each other or might be in total love with each other, but all of them promise to be different from one another.
It is often said within guys that since they are guys, they are a part of a fraternity, but they would never join a sorority if they were girls. Which is true since I too, am a part of a fraternity and having known a lot of my friends, I can tell that what guys think of sororities is a little different that what they are presented to us as.
To begin with, every single sorority has its own image and reputation that everyone is aware of. Some are known to be nice, some aren’t and some are just invisible. They are known to participate in everything but you will never see anyone wearing their letters.
All this apart, I would like to say that although being a guy I am in a fraternity, if I was a girl, I would never even think about joining a sorority. And there is more than just one reason for the fact that I say that.
To explain myself, and my stand, I will give you the view of a guy in a fraternity. For us guys, we live our lives as students, as fraternity brothers, as friends and we are very well aware of the different roles that we play. However, for girls, in my opinion, it is one long run of juggling all duties at the same time. Which is a commendable job, but also very difficult. Us guys have to voluntarily or involuntarily interact with various sororities over the course of a semester and believe it or not, we love a few while we hate a few. But we respect every single one of them for what they stand for and believe in. Please just don’t be mean to us. We are normal men, not “frat guys”. That label just kills us from the inside.
To be a fraternity and show your presence on campus is difficult, but it is relatively easier than being a sorority, hands down. And not to forget that people will obviously confuse your letters to some other organization that has similar sounding letters, it’s annoying, I know. However, what is amazing is how each one us manages to learn a lot from our Greek life experience and make the most of it. Since at the end of the day, what is important is the end result.
