Cam Newton who? If you have been utterly lost this week under a mass of social media posting about Super Bowl 50, you’re not alone. Super Bowl-itis sweeps the nation around this time of year; people screaming in the streets about their favorite teams, people placing bets on the Panthers or the Broncos and looking up fattening food for Sunday seem to be side effects of this epidemic…and there you are, lost among the chaos. The chaos seems to follow you everywhere, and quite frankly you don’t know how to get it of it. You don’t understand why America will collectively be glued to our TV’s for hours. It just does not make sense.
Does it seem like you’re not catching football fever? Here’s the collegiate guide for surviving the first Sunday of February!
FOOD!
You don’t go to Super Bowl parties just to stare at the TV; you go for the socialization …and, more importantly, the food. Food is part of the main reason people attend Super Bowl functions. It’s one of those few American holidays where we are encouraged to eat unhealthy amounts of greased foods, and it would be rude to not take part in this joyous activity. Party hosts and guests alike pride themselves on their famous chip dip or baby back ribs they bring to the game. Despite some foods being messy, they will be sure to make you leaving happy and full.
Wait for the commercials!
Let’s be honest here. The commercials are sometimes some of the most entertaining parts of the few hours we spend gathered around our TV. Some entertaining brands never fail to deliver, such as Doritos and Budweiser. This year if the game doesn’t seem to entertain you, just wait for the commercials. They are sure to be funny, and maybe even heartfelt. By watching the commercials you are then able to participate in the next day’s conversation in class debating which commercials were the best and which ones flopped this year. Overall, they are pretty entertaining.
Invite your girlfriends over to watch the halftime show!
Queen B herself will gracing the stage to give us all the empowering feeling we will need in order to take on the impending Monday. She will be sharing the stage with Coldplay for the first time, possibly to perform their new single “Hymn for the Weekend.” Also gracing the stage will be Bruno Mars, who is sure to blow us all away with his vocal range.
Maybe this isn’t you. You actually know what a fourth down is and who is playing. The Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers are gearing up for the most important game of their careers, and you couldn’t be more excited! You’re so excited by this fact that you volunteered to host the Super Bowl party this year! Now you find yourself freaking out a bit about your impending deadline. Don’t worry; we’ve got you covered.
Keep your cool.
Make a grocery list of what you need to purchase, and if your friends ask if they can bring anything, let them! Accepting help from your friends will instantly make your life easier leading up to game day. Plan out the times that things need to be done. To make it even easier for yourself, set alarms for when things need to be completed. Implementing this method will definitely make your life easier during the big game!
Decorate!
Hello cheap streamers and table cloths! This will be one of the few times that you are encouraged to have a mix of mismatched colors in order to show your support for the two teams playing. Your guests will be instantly pleased when they walk into your home and see the mess of colors. Decorating your home shows that you put in thought and effort into your gathering and it won’t go unnoticed!
Pinterest is your new best friend.
It’s pretty simple; if they didn’t come for the game, they came for the free food and drinks. Refreshments are one of the great reasons that we attend social gatherings. With food out and available for guests, it can possibly ward off that awkward vibe if there is nothing to do or if your guests don’t exactly know each other. Stumped for ideas? Pinterest holds a plethora of recipes such as chocolate strawberries decorated as footballs, homemade mozzarella sticks, and even drink recipes in team colors!
Whether it’s the commercials, the social aspect, or just an undying love for the game, something about the Super Bowl draws people in. Good luck to the girls whose teams are playing, and good luck to the girls who are just there for the commercials!
