Can you tell us about SRS? “SRS stands for Sophomore Residential Seminar. SRS gathers a diverse group of students to learn how about a specific class or topic.
Can you tell us about your specific seminar? “My class was Challenges of Modernity: Istanbul. This small program was a great way to interact with and meet students with similar interests, and then get to go on a trip together. I really enjoyed being in a dorm and interacting with students outside of class. Because Colgate is a small school sometimes we may be afraid to approach other people.“
What did you do on the trip? “My trip to Istanbul consisted of learning of its rich history, its economic progress throughout the years, and its culture and religion. We also learned about the use of the veil, which I found super intriguing. The trip definitely helped me get a lot closer to my classmates. We visited tourist attractions together and also attended night clubs and other fun destinations and just had a great time together.”
Highlight of the trip: “I would say learning about how the nation was formed. In doing so, we got to think about what Turkey is doing to form and construct its nation. They want us to forget certain aspects of the history. Also, not a highlight but I feel the need to mention that there was a bombing while we were there. It was crazy! All of a sudden a bomb exploded in the city. It was tragic, and I give my condolences to all of those affected, but it was also moment when I really realized how grateful I was to live in the United States.”
