HC: What got you interested in designing shoes?
AR: In high school I was very involved in our art program, and I was always doodling on everything in sight (all of the furniture and walls in my room are vandalized with my doodles), and so when my sister had mentioned she wanted a pair of hand decorated vans for her birthday, I decided to give it a try and make them myself. I loved designing the shoes, and I realized they were actually high in demand. So after making a few more pairs for friends and family, I eventually decided to start my business!
HC: How has being in college affected your business?
AR: When I got to college I decided I would take a break from my business for a while to allow myself to adjust. I put a lot of orders on hold, but now I feel well acclimated to school, and I really miss designing the shoes, so I have just recently started back up again!
HC: What is the most “fun” pair of shoes that you have designed?
AR: Definitely a pair for one of my best friends who gave me total freedom in designing the shoes. I know her style and interests, so it was fun for me to come up with designs I knew she would love. I knew she would want a cool, fun, bright pair of shoes, and because I had total freedom to design whatever, I was able to incorporate the drawings I love the most, such as the NYC skyline with the sunset in the background and the classic Audrey Hepburn image. It is also always fun for me to design college themed shoes-especially Michigan!
HC: What is your favorite social media platform?
AR: Instagram is my favorite social media platform for my shoes, and it has helped my business a lot. The audience I’m mostly marketing towards are high school and college students who are extremely Instagram active, and my shoes are best marketed by sharing photos. The hashtags on Instagram also allow me to gain more followers and reach a broader audience!
