Justin Bieber vs. One Direction: Who Did it Better?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Wisconsin chapter.

Boy bands have been the most controversial topic among teenage girls for decades. At one point, it was NSYNC vs. The Backstreet Boys. Now teenage girls are plagued with a much harder decision: Justin Bieber or One Direction? Are you a Directioner or a Belieber? This question became much harder when they both released their most recent albums on the SAME DAY. Teenage girls everywhere went crazy and I’m here to answer the question; who did it better?

Personally, both hold a special place in my heart. When Justin Bieber came out with his first song in 2010 (gasp!), I remember jamming out to the iconic “One Time” before and at middle school dances. Talk about a throwback.

Sadly, he took a break from music at the same time that the beautiful boy band, One Direction, came out. 1D came to into the scene in 2012, and they stole the show with their song “What Makes You Beautiful.” This song came out right when I was finally able to drive and I’m not ashamed to say that this was my friends and I go-to car jam. (Disclaimer: It’s still one of my car jams.)

November 13th, 2015 was a day that changed teenage girls everywhere: forced to choose between binge listening to One Direction or Justin Bieber.

Top Tracks from each album:

Justin Bieber: Purpose

  • What Do You Mean
  • Sorry
  • The Feeling ft. Hasley
  • Love Yourself
  • No Pressure Ft. Big Sean

One Direction: Made in the A.M

  • Perfect
  • End of the Day
  • A.M.
  • If I Could Fly
  • Drag Me Down

I may be a little bias (sorry Directioners), so I asked my roommate who splits her love for both Justin Bieber and One Direction equally what she thought. She said that hands down Justin Bieber stole the show. I would have to agree. Everywhere I go I hear people talking about Justin Bieber and constantly requesting ‘Sorry’. Honestly, if you would’ve told me three years ago that Justin Bieber’s new songs would be party hits in college, I would’ve probably laughed at the crazy thought. Yet, here I am—I can’t go a couple hours without listening to one of Justin Bieber’s new songs. On the flip side, I’ve hardly heard anyone talk about the new One Direction album.

“Sorry” Directioners, Justin Bieber’s new album had a ‘Purpose’ in mind, and while One Direction probably felt as if their songs were “Perfect” and felt like Justin Bieber was “History”, Justin Bieber won this competition.
