Her Campus (HC): Why did you choose to go to Florida State?
Kaylee Parent (KP): My parents are really big Gator fans and I kind of wanted to go against them, honestly I think I made the best decision.
HC: What do you do in your free time?
KP: What free time!? Just kidding, I guess schoolwork. I mean schoolwork takes up most of my time as is. Aside from that I like to hang out with the boyfriend and then Netflix; my recent show is Revenge! I encourage everyone to go watch it, it is really good. And then recent I started reading The Shining by Stephen King
HC: You’re an incredibly focused person and that school dedication has even gained you a spot on Mortar Board. Can you tell us a little about that!
KP: Well, first, a Mortar Board is actually the hat you wear at graduation which is a fun fact a lot of people don’t know. And then Mortar Board—the organization—is a national collegiate honor society that extends membership to the top thirty percent of the senior class based on their academics and then they have to be nominated by either a faculty member or they can nominate themselves. They then have to demonstrate leadership and service skills, and based off of that they are accepted.
HC: Well congratulations on that! But, you’re not only on Mortar Board, you are also on the exec board, tell us about your role!
KP: I am the Director of Communications, so basically I handled the Social Media aspect of it. I also reach out to other organizations to get involved with different service activities.
HC: Aside from Mortar Board, are you involved in anything else on campus?
KP: Well, I’m a math tutor at stroz! I’m also a second semester candidate for Beta Alpha Psi, a national society for accounting, but in spring I’ll be a member. Within Beta Alpha Psi, we get to have different firms come out and speak to us. Just last meeting we had the FBI come and talk! I’m also a student member of the FICPA which is the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
HC: So what are your career aspirations?
KP: Right now, I’m just trying to finish undergrad for accounting and then I plan on going to grad school with a focus in taxation and then hopefully pick up an internship between undergrad and grad school. And then based off of that find a full time job and become CPA certified so I can work as a full time associate in tax at either a public accounting firm or something smaller. But I haven’t really decided yet!
HC: Now while Spring Break is a tad far away, you’re ahead of the curve and already have plans! An internship in London, right?
KP: It’s not an internship exactly. So it’s through EY, and it’s called EY International Scholars program. What they do is select a few people, I think around 30 but I’m not entirely sure because this is the first time they’re doing it at FSU. We have to enroll in a class for the entire spring term called Global Accounting Seminar and then they send you to London for spring break! It’s specifically in London because EY’s headquarters is located there so basically you’re going to network and interact with accounting professionals. It gives us the opportunity to see the international side of the accounting world
HC: Okay, so 10 years from now where do you see yourself? Florida or possibly international?
KP: I’ll let you know after spring break. But um, in 10 years hopefully I’m out of school by then and then far enough into my career that I’m no longer an Associate. Maybe by then I can be a Senior Associate or even possibly a partner! But also by my thirties I hope to be starting a family and be settled down.

HC: Do you have two favorite food places in Tallahassee?
KP: I’m obsessed with Tally Thai because they have bomb sushi! And then Catalina Café has awesome coffee, I usually get the Brown Sugar Latte.
HC: Do you have any obsessions?
KP: As most people know I’m obsessed with cats but I also love monkeys and makeup! I am a faithful buyer of the Lancôme foundation, but what I’m itching to buy is the Lorac contour palette because I use my roommates all the time.
