A UCF Thanksgiving, 10 Reasons Why Everyone Should Have “Friendsgiving”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UCF chapter.

It’s always nice to go home during the holiday season and show how grateful you are for the old friends and family in your hometown. However, in college you spend most of your time with your friends at school. In a way, they become your second family whether you realize it or not. It’s a bit more obvious when you’re apart of Greek life, but anyone can form bonds on campus that will stick for life.

To show our appreciation for each other, my little group (your squad goals) decided to have “Friendsgiving” before we all go home for break. Here are 10 reasons why you should consider trying it.

1. No cooking judgment.

I’ll bring the paper plates and cups, because I’m sure you guys want to eat real food.

2. You might discover a new favorite Thanksgiving dish.

If you’re like me, Thanksgiving at home is pretty routine. Having a mix of different backgrounds together could result in some really good food that may lead you to ask for the recipe.

3. Thanksgiving food x2

I use to wait 365 days to eat stuffing in the past. If you’re a big fan of Thanksgiving food, why not eat it twice a year?

4. Hosting an event like this may inspire your friends to give you a gift in a month.

This one is a little selfish I know, but appreciation should go both ways!

5. Thanksgiving is one of the least controversial holidays.

So maybe the Pilgrams and the Natives didn’t actually have a peaceful dinner, but Thanksgiving doesn’t offend most people. Everyone will feel welcomed and comfortable at the table.

6. You’re hanging out with all of your good friends, without draining your bank account at Pub.

What happened to all of my money? To be honest, going out can be stressful. Someone forgot their ID, someone is wearing the same dress you’re wearing, your ex is at the bar, that guy you stopped texting back is at the bar, your crush is at the bar, and he’s flirting with the girl you hate…I’ll pass, well at least this weekend.

7. It’s an Instagram worthy moment.

Look how cute we are! We’re your squad goals. If you’re Vegan and can’t think of a reason for participating, an Instagram post could be your reason for showing up.

8. It’s a switch up from the typical pizza nights.

I appreciate pizza, but I’m not the type of person that wants to eat pizza every night for dinner.

9. You’ll realize who your real friends are.

These are your people. When you think of the friends you’re thankful for, they come to mind first.

10. Everybody will enjoy feeling the love.

Everyone wants to feel accepted and loved, whether or not they ever say it out loud. Having a “Friendsgiving” will make everyone feel happy about belonging.

You might be going home for the holidays jobless and single, but at least you know you have a great group of friends. In the grand scheme of things, that’s all you really need anyway.

Jade is a junior Radio/Television major with a coffee addiction and may marry a bagel because she loves them so much. She's just your typical sorority girl that idolizes Beyonce, loves being by the ocean, and sharing Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake videos on Facebook because they are friendship goals. Jade loves cheering on her Knights, you can find her at every UCF home game. When life's a mess Jade wants to remind you that you can just pretend you're Olivia Pope and handle it.
