Name: Rebecca Kessler
Major: Public Relations
Minor: Spanish
Year: Junior
Hometown: Paris, France & Northport, New York
Relationship Status: Single
Her Campus (HC): Since you are an out-of-state student, how do you manage with being away from home?
Rebecca Kessler (RK): Picking up your whole life and moving as far from your parents as I did is hard. I only get to see my family about twice a year for a few days, but I try to make the most of it each time. Calling home a couple times a week and FaceTime definitely make being away a little easier.
HC: I know that you are trilingual, how do you know so many languages?
RK: I was born in Paris and lived there for eight years before I moved to New York, so I learned French as a first language. However, my dad is American and he only spoke English to my siblings and I which made English my first language as well. I grew up in a bilingual house and my parents made sure we spoke both languages fluently. I started taking Spanish classes like everyone else did in seventh grade, but because I already spoke French I picked it up much faster than the other students. I completely fell in love with the language and started listening to Spanish music, watching Spanish movies, and I even spent 4 weeks in a small town called Segovia where I went to school to improve my Spanish.
HC: What advice can you give to someone looking for a job?
RK: Itâs not something thatâs going to happen overnight and it might take a while to find a job thatâs a good match for you. You should always keep an updated resume on your computer and make sure to edit it as often as needed. When youâre looking for a part-time job to help while youâre in school, you should try looking for something that will fit best with your school schedule. The more stress-free your job is, the more enjoyable it will be.
HC: Tell us one of the funniest stories of you as a college student.
RK: When I was a freshman living in Kellum, I convinced my friend (who didnât know what she was getting herself into) to come with me and knock on every single door on the male floors of the dorm in order to make some friends. She innocently agreed and we started our journey knocking on the 50+ doors of Kellum. We were having a great time with our shenanigans, when we came to a door that had a specific name written on it (all the doors had the names of the two people that lived inside). My friend and I are both Jewish, which is one of the things that brought us together, and when we got to this one door, the name âBen Schlomoâ was written on it. We looked at each other, laughing because this guy had one of the most Jewish names even weâd ever heard. I convinced her to prank this poor kid with me and we knocked on the door pretending to be from the âJewish Organization of Americaâ recruiting members on college campuses. The longer this kid looked at us confused, the more into detail we went about this fake organization. In the end we told Schlomo we were totally kidding and had made it up to make friends. He looked at us like we were crazy and we walked off thinking we were the funniest people on the planet, but, in reality, we were just batsh*t crazy.
HC: I know you travel a lot, what is your favorite country to visit and where should people go if they visit this country?
RK: Greece is probably my favorite place to travel; the beaches there are magnificent. If you were to go to Greece, I would recommend going to the obvious places like Athens to see the Parthenon. But my favorite Greek island is Corfu, it has the most beautiful ocean Iâve ever seen and the people are wonderful.
HC: Best music to dance to?
RK: Spanish music or hip hop.
HC: Since you also love cooking, can you give us a recipe?
RK: Growing up, my mom would make the most delicious bĂ©chamel sauce to go on certain vegetables or in the French classic, Croque-Monsieur. Itâs made with flour, butter, milk, salt, pepper and nutmeg. The measurements vary depending on how thick you like your sauces.
HC: What is a quote you live by?
RK: âWhat we do in life echoes in eternity.â Itâs from my favorite movie, Gladiator.
HC: Are you excited about the upcoming FSU v. UF game?
RK: So excited. I love football and game days are some of the best memories I have here at FSU, but being that itâs against UF, I already know itâs going to be crazy!
HC: How do you think the turn out will be?
RK: Iâm sure the stadium is going to be packed. I think that any student that can get a ticket will be there cheering. Itâs bound to be a great game.
HC: Whatâs the best memory you have of football season?
RK: Definitely when we won the National Championship my freshman year. That entire season was unbelievable and then when we won the championship, the energy radiating from the entire campus was electrifying. I went to the Civic Center to watch the game on the big screen, and there was no better feeling than winning surrounded by my fellow âNoles. I was crying and I peed myself all at the same time, I was so excited!
HC: Is there any class at FSU that you really enjoyed?
RK: Iâm currently in a special topics communication class called Media and Politics with Professor Azmat Rasul. Iâve always been into politics, so this is a great class that bridges politics and communications.
HC: If you could say anything to your freshman self, what would you say?
RK: Donât go out so much. Coliseum will always be there.
HC: What is your favorite restaurant in Tally?
RK: Masa has some amazing sushi, and I can eat sushi all day, every day.
HC: Man Crush Monday?
RK: Odell Beckham Jr. will always be my MCM. (Go Giants!)
HC: Favorite TV character?
RK: Don Draper from Mad Men.
HC: If you could have a super power, what would it be?
RK: I wish I could teleport. Then I would take weekend trips all over the world (and avoid those dreaded airports).
HC: And lastly, where do you see yourself in 10 years?
RK: The dream would be to have my own international PR firm where I represent clients all over the world and get to travel to some awesome places.
HC: And, if youâre not at class or at work, where can we find you?
RK: Definitely my bed. My days off consist of sleeping and lots of Netflix.Â
