Mental and Emotional Health: It’s Ok to Not Be Ok

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Cal State LA chapter.

We have all been there. Sitting in our rooms, with loads of homework, exams on our minds, familial obligations, and personal issues that make us feel like we are going to explode. It is completely OK and normal to feel like you are going crazy! Often at times however, we are so focused on all of the tasks we have to do on a daily basis that we forget to check up on our mental and emotional health. Which, by the way, is just as important as physical health. It is very important to maintain physical health like eating right, doing exercise, and taking vitamins but it is equally as crucial to take care of our stressed out minds by pacing ourselves, balancing school with fun, and talking to people about our feelings.

When our responsibilities overflow, we tend to push them aside due to the fact that we feel like we cannot accomplish all of them. Eventually though, we feel worse when we do not deal with our responsibilities. Our generation, known as Generation Y, is the generation with the most cases of anxiety and depression among young people that the world has ever seen. Luckily, our campus is able to assist those of us who suffer from mental and emotional disorders.

Whatever your situation is, it is always a good idea to talk to someone that can help you keep your feet on the ground and maintain a sense of mental and emotional stability. Cal State LA has taken the initiative of helping students with mental and emotional health by hiring a full new staff of counselors for the Student Health Center. You can stop by the Student Health Center and make an appointment to meet with a counselor that can help you deal with whatever you are going through. Most importantly, know that everything you are feeling is valid and that you are not alone: it’s ok not to be ok! In a few years you will look back at your college experience and be amazed at how much you have grown as a person mentally, physically, and emotionally.
