In honor of Veterans Day, Her Campus at Oregon State would like to do a round-up of resources available to those on campus who are active military and veterans alike. Our armed forces serve us every day and keep our nation safe and they deserve the absolute best, which is why our campus is approved as military-friendly and has been for the last 6 years. Here are some great resources around campus!
1. The Veterans Lounge
Located in the Memorial Union, the veterans lounge provides a safe and quiet space for studying and connecting with other veterans and military members. The VFSA, #7 on our list, also meets here regularly.
2. Counseling and Psychological Services
Whether you’re an ROTC member dealing with balancing classes and the service or a veteran dealing with PTSD, CAPS can help you. They have many support groups, stress relief resources such as the mind spa, and counselors always willing to listen confidentially. CAPS is located in Room 500 in Snell Hall.
3. Disability Access Services
DAS provides accommodations and support services for veteran students with disabilities. Meetings with the staff are discreet and confidential. To get started with DAS you must first provide documentation about your disability and from the Veterans Administration. If you have difficulties obtaining this information, talk to the staff so they can help you get started.
4. Military and Veteran Resources Office
This recently opened resources office is located in Room 142 in Snell Hall and can give you  assistance by directing you to resources on campus, providing advising, and helping you with tuition assistance, military credits, and education plans.
5. Student Health Services
SHS is here to help veterans if they are entitled to VA benefits and make sure they have access to medical care through the SHS Veterans workgroup. You will have access to all the SHS provides, including but not limited to contraceptive care, massage therapy, nutrition resources, prevention workshops, recovery services for addiction, educational programs, chiropractic care, and our pharmacy.
6. Educational Opportunities Progra
The EOP is a place for personal and academic development of students who have traditionally been denied equal access to higher education such as students of color, students with disabilities, students who are single parents, students with low incomes, older than average students, and veterans. They provide admission process assistance, financial resource assistance, academic and personal advising, review courses, and job and internship search assistance. If you want more information about the program contact the director, Janet Nishihara by visiting her office in Waldo Hall room 337, or by calling 541-737-3628.
7. BeaverSalute
The BeaverSalute outreach program provides free tickets to certain football, basketball, and other games on campus that are set aside exclusively for veterans and active military and their families. You can find special red, white, and blue apparel as well in the Beaver Store to represent your military status or love and respect for those in the military prior to a BeaverSalute game.
8. Veterans and Family Student Association
In their own words, “The mission of the Veterans and Family Student Association is to provide an organized support group of students to facilitate and share knowledge of issues and benefits affecting military veterans, including active duty, Guard, and Reserve, military recruits, and their families at Oregon State University.” For more information contact OregonstateVFSA@gmail.com or check them out on facebook here. They meet in the Veterans Lounge in the MU and meeting times vary but are posted on their facebook page in advance.
9. Workgroup and Advisory Committee
Â
The Workgroup and Advisory Committee has three parts. The first part is the OSU Veterans Workgroup, which works to identify and put into place programs and services on campus to help active military and veterans transition into our community. The second part is the Student Health Services Veterans Workgroup, which ensures access to quality healthcare at Oregon State University for student veterans. Finally, there is the Oregon State University Military, Veteran and ROTC Cultural Awareness and Education Committee which gives a global view of topics that affect active military members, veterans, and their families on campus. They provide a safe space for training, partnership and discussion to help bridge the divide between the military world and our campus.
Reach out to the veteran(s) in your life today and everyday.
Happy Veterans Day!
