I’m glad to know I have a group of people in my life who love me the way I am, specifically, my ride or die, best friend, now my sister, Catalina. If anyone knows me inside and out, aside from my family, and God, it’s probably her. Okay, so what makes us sisters is the main ingredient: we are awkward Hispanics. Hands down, case closed, end of story. We don’t have the interests like most Hispanics do, such as speaking Spanish fluently, dancing Salsa with ease and grace, or even cooking traditional custom foods. But that’s cool, because that’s what makes us, us. Back before I moved here to Orlando, Cat and I would spend summers the best way: absolutely nothing! Our motto is “go with the flow,” okay, but I tend to plan certain things out more, and she runs with it (literally) and sometimes without shoes. When we knew that we would spend the nights at our houses, oh it was on. Let me give you a break down of what me and my girl would do…
1. Crank up the volume! – So she drives this green Volkswagen Beetle, named Lulu, and I drive a black Toyota Camry, named Black Beauty. So different right? But EVERYTIME we know were about to have a spontaneous adventure, we would either play these options: KPOP, also called Korean POP, (that would be her favorite genre, and yes I do enjoy the group, XO), Beyoncé is next; I mean why wouldn’t we play Queen Bey on the road? (We tear up our vocal cords while singing “Drunk in Love” to the point people would actually stare at us shock), and lastly 90’s – 00’s R&B (it’s a great feeling to have someone besides my dad who loves the old school mix). And that’s our preparation for setting the scene.
2. Children’s Pei Wei please. – Pei Wei is our spot. I’m pretty sure the employees know us and sigh with exasperation. We always get children’s Chicken Lo Mein since it tastes awesome. And even though we don’t get any beers, we are the loudest, silliest ones there. Once, a couple actually moved tables because Cat and I were laughing so hard. True story. Sorry mom, I know you would be ashamed.
3. Videos, movies, shows, and more videos. – All we need is a laptop or TV. Once we have our Pei Wei, and our entertainment appliances, oh it’s on for the night. One of the many great things about our friendship is that we NEVER GET BORED. We watch a range of videos on YouTube, especially Beyoncé choreography (our secret dream is to dance for her one day, sorry Cat for spilling it) KPOP videos, and True Blood (when it used to be on the air), now American Horror Story is our game. But that’s the best thing about us; we always have other things to make us laugh and talk all night.
4. She snorts. I’m silent. That’s our laugh. – Okay so the last key ingredient to our “awkwardness” is that we are the silliest people. And it’s worse because we have our own language and looks that can set us off to a non-stop laughing song. She snorts when she laughs, I have one big cry of laughter, and then it’s pretty much silent laughing the whole time. One time we got in trouble at Church for laughing…oh thinking about it still makes smile. It’s our thing, and when people see us they probably think we are drunk, but I say were just drunk off life. Yes, we also tell corny jokes. Told you, awkward.
So that’s me and Cat in a nutshell, nothing special about us except we are special. We are so different compared to other friendships, but that’s because we are more than friends, we’re family. And the feelings you get when you come from a close family are this: acceptance, trust, and love. And I’m glad I found it. We’ve known each other since middle school, and we haven’t changed at all with each other. We’ve seen our good times, and bad times. But I must say, I’m glad to know I have a sister who sees the world the same as I do…just as awkward.
Cat and I…
