I’m going to be downright real with you guys – places that offer great services for those with disabilities and/or mental health issues are hard to find. For my first year of university, I did not attend Windsor but another institution. And if I’m going to be brutally honest here, that specific institution did not carry out their duties as a disability service. It was impossible to make appointments, they never checked up on me, and their accommodations and services were sub-par at best. So, I’m going to tell you all about what U Windsor’s Student Disability Services offers and how to get involved.
Accommodations
All this service needs is some sort of paperwork that documents your disability or mental health issue to go forward with accommodations. They sit down with you every semester to discuss accommodations and any changes you think might be necessary. The one-on-one support is phenomenal and should not be taken for granted. They make themselves very accessible, so take advantage of that.
Technology
They have a lab where there are computer programs that help specific disabilities called the Learning Annex. For example, they own copies of programs that can read the textbook to you after you scan it into the system. After a quick technology orientation, you’re welcome to use it, provided you have permission and/or an access card.
BUILD
This is a program for first years before they actually attend the school. The week before Residence Move-In and Welcome Week, students who sign up for this program are given tours of the school, resources and tips to do well in university, and the opportunity to participate in fun events every evening to get comfortable with the city and make friends before it all starts. All you need to do is apply and wait for confirmation that you got in. And everyone that attends gets a free STEPS membership. STEPS offers sessions all semester on topics like study tips, being more organized, and stress-reducing activities.
