The Struggle Of Going By Your Middle Name

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UNCW chapter.

So your wonderful and loving parents decided to call you by your middle name too? Welcome to the club. I love my name and have gone by my middle name since I was born, but going by your middle name comes with a price. Me and a friend of mine (who also goes by his middle name) were discussing just how annoying it is sometimes if you don’t go by your first name. If you go by your middle name as well, you probably have gone through all of these at least once while growing up.

1. When the teacher took attendance the first day of class you always had to correct them.

2. Everyone asks why you don’t like your first name.

3. Explaining the whole story of why you go by your middle name.

4. The “I’m just going to call you (insert first name here)” joke.

5. “Your middle name isn’t your real name.”

6. Not knowing which name to put down on a standardized test.

7. Answering to both your first name and your middle name without hesitation.

8. Faculty/teachers getting confused because they aren’t sure what to call you.

9. Wondering if you should just go by your first name to make your life easier.
