5 Ways to Keep Yourself Safe This Halloween Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at WWU chapter.
  1. Always abide by the buddy system.

It may seem like you are holding on to an elementary school tendency but it works the same way as it did then. Sticking together, especially when walking at night, keeps you much safer from potential attack. Also, if you stick together you’ll have a witness to all the crazy stuff you see on Halloween.

  1. Bring your own drinks.

It may seem like it will never happen to you but diggings do happen. If you bring your own drinks and keep track of them you know you’re safe and you know what you are putting in your body.

  1. Don’t get into a car with people that are drinking.

This may seem like a given but it still needs to be said. Skipping the cold walk home by climbing into the car of a friend that has been drinking isn’t worth it. A long cold walk, with a buddy, is much better than injury or death.

  1. It’s ok to say no.

Flirting is fun and there is nothing wrong with turning on the charm at a party, but that doesn’t mean you have to do anything you don’t want to just because you were showing interest. Saying no isn’t rude. Not taking care of your physical, mental and emotional health is rude, to yourself.

  1. Don’t do anything you aren’t comfortable with because everyone else is

Peer pressure may feel like something that ended after high school but nothing could be further from the truth. If a group is doing something you feel uncomfortable with or view as potentially dangerous it isn’t worth it. Always listen to your gut and walk away. Being called a wuss is preferred over getting in trouble or getting hurt.
