The thought of exercise inside a sweaty gym over the next few months doesn’t might not get you very pumped for winter workouts. As the weather turns cold, try something new! These creative ways to stay fit in the frigid season are likely to keep you in the mood to have fun, all while staying fit!
Yoga or Pilates
Yoga is a great way to keep muscles limber while taking a stress break, and Pilates builds strong core muscles that can improve your posture. You can find yoga and Pilates classes at the Rec Center, and you can also take part in Meditation in the Museum – a monthly program offered by the David Owsley Museum of Art.
Find a Training Partner
If you are thinking of embracing a new exercise regime, finding a training partner will help you stay motivated and committed. When it’s a cold and dreary morning outside, and the last thing you want to do is work out, a training partner will hopefully get you out of bed and exercising! The best thing is that you can motivate each other, which always helps.
Workout DVDs
Following a workout DVD is another way to exercise while stuck indoors due to cold weather. There are many DVDs to choose from—everything from body sculpting for your legs, arms, hips and abs, to yoga and Pilates for your balance, coordination, flexibility and muscle tone. Select several DVDs and rotate them to prevent boredom.
Video Games
If you already have a video game system in your dorm or house, consider purchasing games like Wii Fit, Wii Sports or Dance Dance Revolution. These games make you jump, dance or swing. Not only will they get you off the couch, but they can be very entertaining for your friends, too! If you live in a residence hall on-campus, check with your front desk to see what kinds of games and activities you can rent or check-out, too!
Dance Classes
Whether it’s hip-hop, jazz, salsa or ballroom dancing, you will burn calories, strengthen your balance and coordination and learn a skill that you can use at your next party or wedding. Check out the BSU Fit class schedule for a low-cost way to get your groove on.
Indoor Athletic Leagues
If you are already athletic and in moderately good shape, look for tennis, racquetball, volleyball, indoor soccer or basketball leagues at the Rec Center. Sporting leagues will keep you in shape and awaken your friendly, competitive spirit. There’s usually a small fee to cover the costs. You’ll meet more health-oriented friends who can take the game outdoors with you once the weather warms!
