Why Guys “Swipe Right”

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at FSU chapter.

Some of us are guilty of downloading Tinder even if it was just for curiosity. We become addicted for a couple of hours as we analyze whether the girl in the bikini photo has an a*s or whether the guy holding the fish in his photo actually fished that thing. We often swipe right because we are the millennials of the hook-up culture and we invented the action “swiping right.” We are (somewhat) proud that some genius created an app so all college students can get laid for once or potentially find the love of our life. *Round of applause to him.* We’d rather perform some kind of finger exercise on the reg than hit the gym because using tinder can guarantee us Netflix and chill, but getting that girl or guy at the gym to text us back is unlikely.

Have you ever thought about why within 10 seconds of being on the app you get a match? Then for 20 seconds you think along the lines of  sh*t I gotta shave. Does this mean I need to buy condoms? Wow, finally a nice girl I can bring home to my mother or well I should probably make my bed.

After chatting with over 50 guys, I realized that whoever is a Tinder whore must have a lot of time on their hands (or must be good with names). Props then to these guys for managing the skill that has further supported college students becoming Eskimo brother and sisters, creating the concept of a booty call and mastering the skill of corny pickup lines. Here are a few reasons why college guys swipe right:

1. Because Pictures are Worth a Hundred Swipes

Pointing out the big elephant in the room, every single guy admitted that they swipe right because of a girl’s appearance. Though we were taught from a young age not to judge a book by its cover, Tinder allows us to create our casting for who we plan to act out our next hookup scene with. Rafael, a senior at Florida State University said, “If a girl has a pretty face, pretty eyes, a bikini photo (gorgeous friends in her pics are also a plus) I swipe right.” Let’s also be truthful that guys totally dig sorority poses, the basic b*tch duck face selfie which portrays us to have massive DSL and puppies. “I swiped right because of the dog in her photo,” said FSU senior Jeremy. “I swipe right on a girl with an interesting photo like hiking Machu Pichu or a girl playing sports or skydiving,” said University of Florida junior Tomas. Some guys apparently even like a girl who travels and is down to get lost in the woods. Pun intended.

2. She’s Gotta Be My Type

No one ever in history can ever describe in full detail what their type is further than brunette, blonde or redhead. Instead, we always assume there are two types: ass or boob guy or both. “I swipe right if a girl is attractive, but she has to have a certain kind of look. Even if a girl is attractive, if I am not feeling her than I won’t really swipe right. It sounds kind of weird but I guess I have a type,” said Garret, a junior at University of Florida.

I don’t really get how guys can know their type based on a little screen photo when I can’t even decide whether I want a burrito or bowl at Chipotle. Apparently guys swipe for their type. “Well, it’s tinder. I do have types that I lean towards in general I can’t put what I find attractive in girls into compartmentalized categories like that. I sort of just know whether or not I’m attracted to a girl when I see it,” said Cameron, senior at Florida State.

3. Because My Friends are Her Friends

Since Tinder is like the sketchiest app to meet people if you really think about it, considering you don’t know if the people you are swiping are secretly serial killers, vampires, or not even the person in the photo. You could find yourself on MTV’s Catfish so we must all take precautions. Guys swipe right when they have mutual friends because maybe she isn’t that crazy if she knows that one guy in your math lab you added on Facebook two years ago, right? “For the most part I swipe right if I have mutual friends with that person. I would think it’s rude not to, but that’s just me,” said Kyle, junior at Tulane University.

While Joey, a junior at University of Florida said, “I think the funniest thing is just seeing friends on Tinder, swiping them right and matching with them. Then I’ll hit them with a ‘hey sexy.’” So maybe that girl in high school you always did have a low key crush on could potentially be your next FWB. I guess Facebook knew what they were doing when they created the idea of mutual friends.

4. But Then Again, She’s Gotta Be Interesting

Does a girl actually liking sports make a difference of how well she will be in bed? The answer is: apparently. A girl who likes to watch others dunk learns to dunk. However, don’t underestimate guys, they actually can be genuine. UF senior Jake said, “Once a girl’s bio had my favorite band on it so I swiped right.” While some even appreciated a girl who knows her pop culture, “I once swiped right because the girl’s bio had a subtle reference to Lord of the Rings and, at the moment, I was reading the book so when I caught that I was proud and had to swipe right,” said Gavin, a sophomore at Cornell University.

5. Out of Complete and Utter Boredom

To be straightforward, when guys are done tweeting, done uploading a picture of their fun weekend with their boys on Insta, done snapchatting, done working out and done playing two hours of NBA2K, they will go on Tinder in hopes that this weekend they will be able to have a little more fun and do less work with their hands. UF senior Stan said, “I go on Tinder because of boredom. That’s pretty much it.” And other guys came to the same conclusion. “I just swipe to pass the time and look at pretty girls when I am bored,” said Blake, junior at Northwestern. Yeah, no I totally get it. Moving a finger in a motion to the right and seeing girls’ photos you probably will never meet is totally a great way to pass the time.

6. If the Girl’s Bio is Screenshot-Worthy

I don’t see how a girl whose humorous matters, but maybe there is some weird theory that those who can make us laugh make for better kissers or are just plain suckers? Michael, a UF graduate said, “I swipe right if the girl has a funny bio.” Which then led me to ask guys what is the funniest bio they have seen on a girl and the answers varied between, “I am here to get my butt touched,” “I am an adventurous girl with a passion for big cock,” “I am a tranny at heart,” to “I learned that men have two emotions: hungry and horny,” and “ If I see you without an erection, I’ll make you a sandwich.” Guys said that an interesting bio allows for them to use that as a conversation starter or at least will make the hookup more interesting. “If the girl seems cool based on her bio I swipe right, but honestly subconsciously I just swipe to hook up,” said Sebastian, a junior at Florida International University.

7. A Pipe, A Swipe

This is by far the most obvious reason. I don’t know about you, but Tinder should totally begin to charge Magnum and Trojan for advertisement on the app; whoever downloads the app  is usually DTF. Manny, a junior at FSU said, “To be honest, I was just trying to pipe but a cute sexy profile pic, that’s the only thing guys tend to look at before making that split second decision to swipe right or not.” If you think about it, one swipe can lead to the best (or worst) sex of your life, and so can a decent profile pic.

8. She Reminded Me of Me

Apparently, people have weird fetishes and like to swipe girls based on common interests, but who knew guys like girls that remind them of themselves? Isn’t that similar to like swiping right for your twin sister? “I once swiped right on a girl’s profile because she looked like the female version of me,” said Isaac, a junior at Florida International University.

9. It Gives Us a Shot At Love (and Lust)

Maybe we are too young for Match.com or often cannot find the girl of our dreams in class or drunk at the club so Tinder solves this issue. Tinder is also the solution for guys that are hopeless romantics and actually want to meet their Tinderella. “It’s fun to see who’s out there. I’ve never gone on an actual date, I don’t really set out for that, but I’d keep an open mind if I met someone worth meeting,” said Daniel, a junior at Emory University. Other guys feel that Tinder makes them grow some balls and gives them a higher chance of scoring a touchdown. This is the case for UF junior Joseph who said, “If I swipe right it’s a better shot to get with a girl since I don’t get with any.” Don’t worry, Joseph I am sure a swipe right will eventually lead to some pipes.

10. Everyone Swipes Right

Why take your time picking the specific girl you are interested in when you can see the girls that are interested in you first? David, a junior at FIU said, “I swipe right to everybody.” Enough said.

We should all be grateful that by the click of one swipe our chances of a one night stand increase. Isn’t it nice to know that guys care about how interesting and funny we are? Maybe Tinder isn’t so bad. Maybe your prince is out there. Maybe it’s time to delete the app and return to the old fashion way. Nah, who are we kidding? We love to Netflix and chill too much.
