If you’re a fan of the Back to the Future movies, you probably know that today, October 21st, 2015, is the day Marty McFly visited when he went to the future in Back to the Future II. If you’re not, here’s a quick summary: In the first movie, Marty McFly accidentally gets stuck in the past and interrupts his parents’ first meeting, causing his mother to fall in love with him instead of his father. Marty spends the movie working to get his parents back together while trying to get back to the present (1985). Spoiler alert: his parents fall in love and he makes it back to 1985, only to meet a frazzled Dr. Emmett Brown, the inventor of the time machine, who rushes Marty to 2015 in order to save Marty’s kids, who have gotten themselves into a bit of trouble.
Unlike the first movie, when Marty went to 1955, the writers had to be creative when deciding what 2015 was going to look like in Back to the Future II. When the movie came out in 1989, the writers made all sorts of crazy predictions about what the year 2015 would be like. Let’s see how they did:
Cars:
One of the biggest mistakes they made was about the cars. They were guessing that in the 30 years between 1985 and 2015, we would’ve gotten around to developing highways in the sky. Unfortunately, they were mistaken, and we still spend hours waiting around in traffic on the ground.
Fashion:
Their fashion choices were also completely off—they guessed we’d be wearing ridiculous, futuristic outfits complete with face paint and helmets.
Also, they thought that we’d be wearing two ties and that it would be cool to pull our pockets inside out.
However, they did get one thing right—the shoes. Although Nike has yet to get their shoes to tie themselves like they did in the movie, the style was right on target.

Hoverboards:
They got a little closer with hoverboards. Obviously, no one flies around on hoverboards casually, but we have seen similar hoverboard-like devices pop up, and apparently Tony Hawk even tried out a real floating hoverboard.

They were almost there with the movies. As soon as Marty gets to the future, he walks by an advertisement for Jaws 19 which pops out at him in 3D.
They were only a little off here—we’ve given up on Jaws, but a certain other saga is carrying on longer than anyone thought possible.
Videochatting:
And one thing they got completely right was videochatting. They guessed correctly that by 2015, regular phone calls would be old news.
Baseball:
And now we just have to wait and see how they did with predicting the World Series.
