4 Easy Tried and Tested Workout Hairstyles For All Hair Types and Lengths

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Stout chapter.

I know from personal experience that when I workout, my hair falling in my face can completely ruin my workout. It’s annoying, frustrating, and irritating to constantly have to keep readjusting your hairstyle as you workout. So, for all those going through the struggle, here are some tried and tested workout hairstyles that won’t let you down and can be a staple hairdo for any hair type: fine or curly, for short, medium, or long hair. Read on to find out how!

Bunched Ponytail

This ponytail is a bit of twist of the plain old ponytail. As an extra bonus, it will keep all that hair in your ponytail from bouncing around everywhere in your face and off your neck! Start by taking all the hair up into a ponytail and secure it well! At this point you may want to hairspray back any ‘fly-aways’ and help give the hair some texture to stay in place. Then, grab a small handful of clear elastics or any sort of small ponytail (I find that the clear elastics or colored ones work the best for this hairstyle) and begin to tie the hair with the elastics about 2-3 inches apart. Get creative with this part, and tie as many or as little elastics as you like to secure that awesome ponytail!

Braided Ponytail

This hairstyle is a great hairstyle that won’t come out or let you down no matter how intense your workout may be! Again, start by pulling all of the hair up into a ponytail and secure with a ponytail and hairspray any hairs that might get into your face. Next, divide the ponytail into 3 equal sections and begin to braid the hair all the way to the end. For a different kind of look, begin to braid the ponytail  halfway and secure the braid with a ponytail or an elastic. From here you can decide if you want a messier kind of look and begin to pull on the edges of the braid to loosen it.

Braided Bun

I absolutely love this hairstyle, especially for workouts that get you hot and sweaty! The bun enables you to keep all your hair off your neck and secured, so that it won’t budge as you work out. To begin this hairstyle, start at the top of your top of your head and grab a section (as big or little as you like) and divide it into three equal sections. From here you can either choose to do a classic French braid or rock out an awesome Dutch braid and continue until you reach the nape of your neck and secure with a ponytail or an elastic. If you have ultra-fine hair like myself, you can once again braid the ponytail section and secure it with an elastic. Then, begin to wrap or twist either the braided or plain ponytail into a bun and secure it tightly with another elastic or ponytail. For a hairstyle that won’t ever let you down, spray with your favorite hairspray and that’s it!

Braided Headband

We certainly cannot forget about our short haired girls who cannot put their hair into a ponytail or a bun, so here’s the perfect hairstyle for everyone! Even if you have longer hair and don’t feel like putting your hair up, this hairstyle works for everyone to keep their hair out of their face. Start making a deep side part and grab about a 1-2 inch section from the side with more hair, and divide it into 3 equal pieces. Begin the braid as normal and grab very small sections from the front of your hair (closest to your face) like a typical French braid and incorporate it into one of the sections. Do not add hair from the other side into the braid, but continue to add it from the front only. By doing this technique it will create an awesome braid! Continue to braid all the way down to about the end of your eyebrow or until you reach your ear and then simply continue to braid the 3 strands until you reach the end of the hair. Secure the braid with an elastic and lift up a chunk of hair near your ear and tuck the braid underneath and secure it with bobby pins. For extra hold, spray with hairspray to keep that awesome hairdo in place!

There are endless ways to personalize or make these hairstyles fit your style or liking. With these hairstyles, you can get your workout on confidently and never have to worry about your hair falling in your face anymore! With that said, work hard, train hard, and look fabulous while doing it all!
