Fall fashion is a melody of plaid, over-the-knee boots and cozy knits, all topped with the number one accessory, a pumpkin spiced latte. Variations of this uniform can be seen coast-to-coast, but what’s a trend-loving southwestern girl to do when 89 degree weather won’t allow for layers and hot drinks? This girl needs to get creative and follow a few simple tricks!
1. Buy summer and transitional staples in fall colors.
Even though the sun’s blistering rays won’t be leaving anytime soon, that doesn’t mean fall colors have to be put on the back burner until mid-October. The days of hot pinks and pastels are trickling away, and a true fashionista’s closet is dying for rich browns, deep reds and creamy, mustard hues.    Â
Last year’s Marsala is still making waves on the runway and can easily be worn with transitional pieces such as skinny jeans and flowy blouses. Similarly, the Pantone Color Institute, known for providing color trend forecasts, introduced nine hues that collegiettes can rock, rain or shine, in anticipation of fall.
For color enthusiasts, Cadmium Orange can be incorporated in comfortable, breezy looks while still feeling seasonal. Cashmere Rose, Amethyst Orchid, and Biscay Bay are this season’s pinks, purples and teals and can be combined with versatile dresses for year-long wear.
The darker souls have a variety of choices with an inky blue called Reflecting Pond, a military hue titled Dried Herb, and a color reminiscent of grey sky named Stormy Weather. Lastly, in-betweeners will not be disappointed with the greenish grey Desert Sage or golden-yellow Oak Buff.
2. Enjoy beauty trends without worrying about the heat.
Not only is beauty a fool proof way to both experiment with fall trends and avoid heat stroke, but is also the least expensive way to get into the fall spirit. A dark lip is always the first sign of fall, and this year’s trendy orchid lips are sure to make a statement, without drenching sweat, or debt. Glitter, along with a strong lip and eye combination, is also making a comeback and is perfect for Friday nights.
3. Focus on the accessories.
While the need to roam around in shorts and tank tops might still be present, there’s nothing wrong with starting to build a fall accessory bank for daily use. It may not be boot weather quite yet, but many of today’s shoe trends are perfectly appropriate for our current temperatures. This season’s shoes are an easy way to adapt fall fashions, with Mary Janes, laced-up flats and low menswear inspired shoes making numerous retail and blog appearances. Jewelry can also change up an outfit and give it fall vibes without compromising comfort. Large estate jewelry, delicate pendant necklaces, stacked cuffs and whimsical brooches can all elevate a breezy outfit.
4. Pick trends that are versatile.
American fashion’s love of casual wear is a collegiete’s best friend. Denim and suede are making headlines and should be worn during chillier days. A-line skirts, distressed jeans and flared pants are all the rage; and paired with a light Victorian blouse, will feel seasonal without going against the weather. The best part about all of these trends? The added versatility that comes with a more substantial fall wardrobe; once the weather allows for it that is!
5. It’s all about the styling.
Not only is it fun to experiment with new trends, but taking on traditional fall pieces such as flannels and chambrays is a must. While they can be worn as outwear during chilly mornings, tying them around your waist or draping them over your shoulders will turn them into Instagramable accessories; and when the time comes, they’ll surely get the spotlight they deserve as the weather gets colder.
