Going away to college for some of us means separating from our partner. For those of us that choose to stay together while we are away, we know it’s not easy. While trying to survive a long distance relationship can be difficult, it can really help a relationship in many ways. We must take it one day at a time, and remember to do all of the following: Â
1. ALWAYS be honest.
Of course this is a given, but seriously the most important. Know 100% that you can always trust one another to be honest no matter what, or you will eventually find yourselves doubting one another. It cannot be stated enough: honesty is the BEST policy.
2. Keep in touch daily.
Now I’m no relationship expert, but when it comes to LDRs, it’s known that communication is key. The internet has changed how easy it is to keep in touch and we would be fools not to take advantage of this. If you love someone and want to make it work, you must communicate often and eagerly.
3. Let things go.
While some issues may seem like the end of the world, they’re usually not. Things like jealousy and possessiveness can cause us to overreact. The key to making each other happy is to let small things go. With trust and honesty, there should be no reason for overreacting. It’s much more satisfying knowing you can trust each other.
4. Take advantage of the separation.
After spending a long time together, being apart seems impossible. Sometimes the good thing about LDRs is actually the long distance. Some of us tend to rely too much on our guy for personal things. Being apart gives you time to embrace your individuality. Not only does the distance help you grow as an individual, but it also makes seeing each other much more special.
5. Realize how lucky you are.
Most people in long distance relationships lose sight of how lucky they are. Yes, your situation is unfortunate because of the distance, but there are many people who would love to have a relationship strong enough to survive the distance. So don’t overlook how lucky you are and take advantage of what you have, you’ll be much happier.
6. Keep the romance alive.
Distance makes it hard for us to hold on to the romance factor of our relationships. These days it is easy to send a romantic text or to say it on the phone. Unfortunately, sometimes a romantic text really doesn’t compare to a real romantic gesture. Try to stay as spontaneous and fun as you can. Send each other gifts in the mail, or plan visits where you do romantic things.
7. Be smart.
Always remember why you two are able to have a long distance relationship. Never forget that your decisions don’t just affect you, but they affect those that love you. Think before everything you do. Be smart, and you will be happier. Just don’t forget that you are both only human. Leave room for mistakes but define shared boundaries beforehand.
8. Talk about everything.
Never be afraid to tell each other what you are feeling. The more you communicate with each other, the better you’ll get along. Include even the small details of your day that seem unimportant. As a couple, you should love telling each other about your day and hearing about theirs. Also don’t avoid talking about your fears and doubts. While only talking about the positive things seems better, it helps to work through your fears together. It will only bring you closer.
At times LDRs seems impossible. But with the right level of communication and commitment, it can actually bring couples closer together. If you’re struggling through a long distance relationship, stay positive and use these tips to make the best out of your relationship. If your partner isn’t willing to try as much as you are, reevaluate the reasons you are together. Don’t forget to talk it out and be positive. Good luck!
