An Open Letter to the Boy Who Opened the Door for Me

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UFL chapter.

To the boy who opened the door for me,

You don’t know my name and I don’t know yours. You probably don’t remember who I am, as we only had a brief five-second interaction in Heavener Hall. But, thank you. I want you to know I noted this small yet kind act you performed as I went to class. It didn’t make me feel superior or pompous. It made me feel appreciated.

Yes, there are many girls who have inflated egos and are ungrateful for such things, but there are also many who aren’t. You have no idea how stressed about exams I was prior to our exchange, and your courteous action genuinely made my day a whole lot better. You are a true gentleman with a good heart, and I can assure you that your politeness is not overlooked. Hold onto those mannerisms because one day you will find a girl who will be captivated by your valor and kindness (if you haven’t already).

I’m relieved there are still boys like you out there who even think to take the time to hold a door open for a complete stranger. I know this is no longer the 1950s, but chivalry should not be some abandoned historical concept that our grandparents share stories about. You have restored my belief that chivalry is not dead.

Call me old fashioned, but it’s truly sad how our generation has fallen into the “Netflix and chill” culture. What’s even more sad is I can’t just blame it on the boys. Us girls no longer defend our self-worth, and we have allowed boys to degrade us into accepting these new social norms.

You have reinforced my belief that all guys are indeed not the same. There are ones that still care and will treat girls with class and respect. There are ones who will give you their jacket in the middle of winter because you stubbornly refused to bring your own. There are ones who will call you, not text, to make sure you got home safely. There are ones who will walk on the street side of the sidewalk in case there are unsafe drivers on the road. There are ones who insist on walking you all the way to your doorstep. There are ones who send you a “good morning” text to start your day off. There are ones who take the time to perform such sweet and simple gestures just to bring a smile to someone else’s face.

Girls aren’t asking for a fairytale overwhelmed with grand gestures and expensive gifts. The amount of money you spend on us is quite irrelevant, and all of these efforts don’t cost a penny. We don’t even care to be swept off our feet or achieve these “relationship goals” invading social media. We just want to feel respected and cherished. It’s the little things that go a long way, and I’m just thankful you opened the door for me.

Sincerely,Me
