Picture this: It’s the first day of fall semester. You’ve spent the weekend moving into your new home for the year, catching up with your roommates, and organizing yourself for the first week of classes. On the first day of school you put on the new outfit that you bought just for this occasion and head to class with a smile on, ready for a new and exciting semester.
Fast forward to October: It’s been about a month of school and the novelty of a new year has completely worn off. Face it, syllabus week-ended as soon as it came, you wore all of your new outfits in the first week of the semester, and midterms season has kicked into full gear. You can barely muster a smile when you pass your classmate from last year on campus, and all you can think about is going home for Thanksgiving break… in over a month.
This is the time of year that I like to call the “Back to School Slump.” It’s that time where it feels like you are drowning in a sea of commitments, with no hope of getting your head above water anytime soon. However, this year we were lucky to get some amazing goodies in our #HCSurvivalKits to help resolve the back to school blues.
Revamp Your Beauty Routine
The first step to beating the Back to School Slump is to focus on you. I’m sure you’re familiar with the phrase, “Look good, feel good.” Adding something new to your beauty routine will give you an extra reason (besides the crazy money you are paying for tuition) to want to get out of bed and get to class. TRESemmé’s new Perfectly (un)Done Sea Salt Spray and Perfectly (un)Done Wave Creation Sea Foam can give your hair a relaxed, natural look that will make you feel like you’re at the beach even as the crisp chill of Fall creeps in. Alternatively if you want to spice up your make-up routine, NYC New York Color’s City Proof 24HR Waterproof Eyeshadow and Eye Primer are just what you need; these two products come in vibrant, exciting colors at a price that won’t break your budget!
You Are What You Eat
Another thing I notice as my semester gets hectic is that I hardly ever have time for a good, healthy meal. When time is an object I head to Chipotle (luckily we have one just a mile away from BC) to get a filling meal packed with local produce and non-GMO ingredients. Other times when I just need my sweet tooth fix, I get the boost I need by sprinkling some Zing™ Zero Calorie Stevia Sweetener in my coffee. This leaves me feeling much better than when I fuel myself off of cookies and lattes packed with artificial ingredients.
#GettingBackGivingBack
Sometimes the best way to feel good and dig your way out of that slump is to give back to the community. My Social Canvas is a social enterprise fashion brand that brings students and emerging designers together to create apparel collections for a cause. If fashion is your calling, this is a great way to get involved and to give back to something meaningful. Or you could get involved with No Celings: The Full Participation Project 30-day challenge to promote the involvement of women in the 21st century. Another fun thing to do boost your morale is to have a She’s The First Tie-Dye Cupcake bake sale! Get in the kitchen with some friends to whip up some fun treats and raise money for a cause that provides scholarships to girls in low-income countries.
Spoil Yourself
Sometimes all you need to get back on track is to take some serious “me-time.” Maybe you need to waste a day decorating your room or doing arts and crafts; Martha Stewart has some super fun DIY projects to take your mind off the stress of school. Or maybe you need a good read (that isn’t required for class). We got to check out samples of We Were Liars and Every Day, two new bestselling novels that are a must-read. If all else fails, sometimes you just need to spoil yourself with a big purchase, such as the MZ Wallace Chelsea Tote.
It’s hard to snap out of it once you’ve sunken into the Back to School Slump, but it is not impossible to find that pep in your step again! Thanks, #HCSurvivalKits, for helping Her Campus BC get ready to take on the rest of the semester!
