If I was asked how I would describe college so far, I would smile and say simple “It’s like the Wizard of Oz. The only difference is that unlike Dorothy wanting to go back home to Kansas while my home is in Oz. We don’t usually think about it but college is like Oz, the Adelphi Campus is full of color. There are many flowers and trees, each with their own vibrant and beautiful colored hue. There are people that welcome you once you step onto the campus ready to help you with any problems you may encounter while your time at Adelphi. They can help you understand your new schedule, find out which building your classroom is located in. There are people that will help you choose classes that are better for your major that also match your interest.
Even on your ride down the yellow brick road you’ll make some friends that could be from around the school or some out of state or even out of the country. Although there is no physical ‘Wicked Witch of the West” or her “flying monkeys” instead your face a ton of work that will be required. For most incoming freshmen like myself, it’s a lot to take in. The work load may be hard to deal with, some high schools never gave so much work. We also may have difficulty understanding the expectations of our new instructors that instead of being called “Mrs. Ms. Or even Mr. we now must call them professor. A lot of people may be on top of you to make sure you have everything under control. Although it is a nice gesture, but sometimes it may seem overbearing. As freshmen we are pushed towards joining sports teams or clubs since we are not allowed to join fraternities and sororities until spring semester or for most, until we are sophomores.
For most of us we are more than willing and wanting to join a team or club but with the new work load it’s often hard to be part of a club and wanting to fully participate as well as get our homework done and make time for studying for our exams.
But like Dorothy and her friends who fall asleep in the poppy patch, sometimes a good quick rest can help us reach our goals.
We come to college to realize who we are as an individual as well as what we want to do for a career. Some of us want to be Nurses helping those who are sick and make them better once again, some of us want to be a dancer, dancing our hearts out at Carnegie Hall or on Broadway as the lead. Some of us want to work in business and make our own empire trying to help people get jobs and ways to help people who may not be able to help themselves. Or some, like me, want to a writer, writing books that help you recognize that small is mighty than the big.
There are positives and there are negatives of the school. Hey there are good and bad parts of Oz too. The only difference is when Dorothy clinked her heels together she went back home to Kansas while when I clink my heels I’m already home.
