Day #1: Introductions
Let’s start with the basics, the big first day! Usually, at the beginning of an internship, it is normal to have an orientation to get you acquainted with rules, procedures, and get you access to everything that you will need throughout your time there. Please, be present at orientation! If not, you will be lost for weeks without your log-ins or knowing the other professionals. Also, try to start your internship early!
I had the luck to start a week early while interning at a digital advertising and marketing agency, and wow! It made a whole lot of a difference! I got one-on-one orientation from one of the co-founders while sitting with some of the managers of the company. I got to interact with different employees, listen to their advice, make connections, and was even taken out for lunch!
2. Pen and paper, your new besties!
I can’t stress this one enough, have pen and paper with you at ALL TIMES. You are interning because you are interested in learning about the business, new skills, and want to continue developing professionally. Therefore, take notes! You got a called for a “quick” brainstorm session? Bring your notepad. Going to a presentation? Bring your notepad. Going to lunch with co-workers? Bring your notepad. You never know when ideas might come up and you need to write them down. Also, a lot of times you will find that employees will try to teach you new things or ask you for help when you already have 1000 tasks.
3. Research, research, research
Again, you are interning because you want to learn. Therefore, do your research! If someone asks you to do something and you’re not sure what it is, GOOGLE IT! Chances are, you have done it before but you don’t know the correct term. If not, ask questions and then do further research. It always reflects well on you when you are a step ahead of the game, and you are able to talk deeper about a subject. Either way, we learn something new every day, right?
4. Shadowing
If you are doing an internship within the industry that you want to focus your career on, you will find someone that is doing exactly what you want to do. So, shadow them! Ask them if they mind you shadowing them for a few hours a day, or if you can help them with any tasks. Ask them about their jobs and their duties; tell them about your goals and how you are working towards them. They might even become your mentor.
5. Improvement is part of the process
There are always areas that you can improve on, use your internship to help you improve them. Always request feedback and find out ways that you can stregthen your weaknesses. Employers love having interns who are always looking to better themselves, and show an effort to do so. This showcases your commitment to your position and your character.
6. Questions???
Never be afraid of asking questions. You are taking part of a learning process, which will come with tons of questions, and it’s okay! Employers are there to train you and help develop you. Take advantage of that and ask away!
7. Be involved!
Don’t be afraid of getting involved while interning! Attend as many brainstorming sessions, sit-in meetings, and be open to participate in different projects. By doing this, you will be networking with other professionals and learning tons of new things! Besides, did you know that you could include a “projects” section on your resume and LinkedIn? Yes! You’re welcome.
8. Keep it professional
Please, please, please ALWAYS be professional. Keep in mind that you’re representing yourself, and you are your own brand. Keep your professionalism on and off your internship. You never know who you might meet but most importantly, who might see you while you’re off ;)
9. Dress to impress
I know it is a funny picture, but it’s true; dress for the job you want! Before starting your internship or even when you attend the interview, make sure you do your research on the company’s dress code. Besides, isn’t there something about a suit that makes you feel confident? Like you can take over the world? Exactly.
10. Enjoy it
Have fun with your internship! Enjoy your time with the company, and make sure to leave a positive, lasting impression. Go ahead, rock on! You got this.
