The first week of classes has flown by, and many students across campus are already starting to feel the pressure of the new school year. Amid all the assignments, tests, and work commitments, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Fortunately, Hart House – U of T’s beloved student hub – offers students the chance to take a break from their studies, find new hobbies and interests, and simply have fun. Here are some exciting events and opportunities to watch out for as we head into the fall season:
Visual Arts: Currently, the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery is presenting an exhibition entitled “The Flesh of the World.” Inspired by this past summer’s Pan Am Games, the exhibition features video installations, illustrations, and other creative works that examine the issue of embodiment. Admission is free and students can visit the exhibition up until October 10.
Theatre: “We the Family,” a dark comedy exploring the tensions between two families, is the season opener for Hart House Theatre. Student tickets are just $12 on Wednesdays, and the show runs until October 3. Stay tuned for my personal favourite, Shakespeare’s Hamlet, in November!
Physical Activity: The Hart House Fitness Centre offers a wide range of exercise and fitness classes. Whether you want to commit to a particular class or just join a drop-in class every so often, there are plenty of opportunities to stay active. I highly recommend the ballet and yoga programs!
Mental & Spiritual Well-Being: Every Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30pm, Hart House holds a drop-in workshop for those interested in learning basic meditation techniques. These classes aim to help participants reduce stress and find a sense of inner peace.Â
Film: Up-and-coming filmmakers from the U of T community will present their short films and videos at the Hart House Film Screening Party on Thursday, September 24 at 8pm. Held outside in the beautiful Hart House Quad, the night will feature a reception with light refreshments, as well as a meet-and-greet with fellow film enthusiasts. It’s the Hart House version of TIFF! :)
