Although the walls are white, and the tile floor or carpet has a deep resemblance to a hospital, there is a way to make your dorm room not feel like such a prison cell. The next four years are a blast, and you’ll probably spend a lot of time in the center of these four white walls with a roommate. To make your experience a good one, here is a compiled list of all the key components you need to make your dorm room into a cozy sanctuary that you’re entire floor will want to hang out in.

Tapestry
This is a large piece of fabric that should take up an entire wall in your dorm. With such beautifully-colored, intricate designs, the piece will brighten up the room right away. You can even touch it up with Christmas lights along the border of the tapestry; this really creates a cozy feel! Or, there’s always the option of using a tapestry as a bed cover. Draping the cloth over your bed will add a hipster/bohemian feel to your room.

Lighting
Most college students are not allowed to have candles in their dorms per fire hazard safety precautions. Christmas lights framing the ceiling of you room will have much better lighting compared to whatever dorm light the university has provided you with. The dimmed lighting from the Christmas lights will actually put you in a more relaxed environment for studying!

Photos/Canvases
Whether you’re artsy or not, canvases are a great way to personalize any room. The other nice perk of canvases is that they are not heavy, so a simple pushpin is all it takes to get the masterpiece hung up. If you’re not so artsy, Etsy.com sells personal canvases- anything from movie quotes to personalized paintings. Another awesome touch to make your dorm extra homey is to get as many pictures as possible all over your dorm. You can do this with twine and some clothespins, or just by hanging them all over your room in no specific order.

Small touches
Simple fluffy rugs or light playful curtains can transform any ordinary dorm room into a princess palace. Cute moon chairs, or trunks as coffee tables (if you have the space) can really show off your personality. If you have wooden furniture, a good way to cover it up is contact paper! Contact paper is similar to a big sticker, it will cover the yucky wood you have in your room. You can peel it off at the end of the semester, and it’s super cheap too!

This is your dorm room; personalize it to the best of your ability! Your room is a reflection of you, so dress it up and make it as pretty as you are. Happy decorating!
