Why You Should Join a Sorority This Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at URI chapter.

Q: “What’s Greek life? I’ve never heard of it until move in day.”

A: Only the BEST thing ever. (Okay, maybe that’s a little bias.)

Greek life is an outstanding part of the student population that is made up of national and local organizations more commonly known as sororities and fraternities. These organizations help the community in many ways such as raising money and awareness for philanthropies and team up for different events making every year an awesome school year. As a college freshman, or anyone who hasn’t yet had an interest in joining Greek life, you may be looking for answers to your questions such as, “what’s the point of even joining? We are here to answer your questions, just keep reading…

Find a home away from home. While going through recruitment freshman year so many girls said, “I have no idea what I would do without my sorority.” To be honest, the statement became a little over played. However, after a long new member period and finally becoming initiated; everyone would agree that this statement is nonetheless TRUE. Your sorority becomes your happy place knowing that all the women you surround yourself are now your sisters. A bad day is never spent alone with sisters by your side.

Two words: Greek week. If Greek’s don’t already rule the school, during Greek week they do. Lip sync, Greek sing and opening day games are all incredibly fun events designated for members of the entire Greek community to come together and celebrate for an entire week. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of this?!

You will have life long sisters and best friends. Joining a sorority doesn’t end at college graduation. It lasts a lifetime. Thousands of wonderful women across the world wear the same Greek letters as you do.

All of the sudden, your closet will get bigger. Feeling out of something to wear to the party that’s planned for Friday night? No worries, getting 100 (or more) new sisters means 100 closets filled with cute clothes to share. “Where’d you get that shirt?” “It’s not mine, it’s (insert sisters name)!” Who knew joining a sorority could open up so many fashion doors?

There will always be someone to ask for advice. Whether it’s texting boys, what not to wear, which workout routines are best or how to do your math homework, there will always be someone there who knows the right answer. You will have tons of sisters and together, they have all experienced a lot.

You will impact your community in a positive way. Every sorority has a philanthropy that they represent and raise money for. Most sororities choose a philanthropy that they know will be close to their area so they can make time to lend a helping hand to those in need, in person. Making friends while helping the community out is a great combination that all comes together with being in a sorority.

The word ‘bored’ will no longer exist. If you want to go out have a blast or stay in and have a relaxing movie night, there is always someone to hangout with or something to do.

Your social skills will be on point. Going through recruitment forces you to talk to people that you’ve never met before and exchange life stories, hardships, accomplishments and so much more. Other girls will choose the same sorority as you to represent on bid day and that means many new friendships to be made. With practice from recruitment and a little effort to get out there and make friends, you will open up and become a social butterfly.

Career networking. Between all the Universities in the world that have Greek life, someone, somewhere, will share the same letters as you. Think about it like this: one day you go for your interview of your dream job and the boss happens to have had shared the same sisterhood and Greek life experience as you did. Let’s just say, you got the job.

10. Because, why not? Greek life may not be for everybody, but trying it out certainly won’t hurt. College is an entirely new experience that can be done in so many ways depending on the type of person you are. Joining a sorority will help you grow as an individual, make you feel apart of something larger than life and gain friendships, or should I say bridesmaids, that you will cherish for the rest of your life.

In honor of URI’s sorority recruitment starting tonight…

We are wishing the best of luck to all sororities who are looking for the newest and most perfect women to fill their new member class!
