Quotes for Quandries

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Hi, I’m Chloe Honey, and I’m addicted to quotes.

In all honesty though, if you were to ask me for advice, chances are I’d respond with a quote, my analysis of the text, and how it is relevant to your situation.  That’s because quotes can be really inspiring and extremely relatable, even in a situation when you feel alone.  They say actions speak louder than words, but I think that sometimes the right words can prompt actions that one wouldn’t necessarily have taken before.  If discovered at the right moment, a quote can spark a passion and be life changing under the right circumstances.

There are so many reasons as to why I love quotes, and I hope some of these following quotes inspire you to become a quote-a-holic yourself.

I absolutely adore this Eleanor Roosevelt quote. Not only did this former first lady help pave the way for the feminist movement, but her eloquence and poise made for a perfect, and abundant source of inspirational quotes.

The quote above is one of my favorites of hers.  It reminds me a lot about the pettiness of high school and the people I used to hang out with.  As you get older, you realize that the people you should be interacting with are the ones that truly stimulate your mind.  You should be able to talk about an array of different topics, from politics and philosophy to reality television and popular culture.  In this quote, Eleanor says that by surrounding yourself with individuals who solely talk trash about others or solely gossip about the latest social happenings, there is little room for one to grow.

This Albert Einstein quote especially helped me during the college application process.  I was proud of my resume, proud of my grades, proud of what I accomplished, and yet I felt humiliated that my worth in society was basically relegated to my SAT and ACT test scores.  This quote by Albert Einstein, in my opinion, is a criticism on the American educational system, as well as a solace to those, such as myself, who feel degraded by standardized testing.

Dita von Tees actually makes me want to cry with this quote.  This quote is perfect for those days that you are having body image issues.  In this quote, Dita acknowledges the fact that one individual cannot please everyone.  Similar to the Einstein quote above, just because one individual contains a certain trait does not mean they are any less of a person.  This quote is also a response to those who are critical of body image, saying that just because one person has all these incredible traits, someone will still pick out a flaw somewhere.  Dita is trying to help us love ourselves, and I absolutely love her for it.

Nietzsche brings up a very valid point in this argument: just because everyone says “no” or shuts the door in your face, or even calls you crazy, doesn’t mean you are so.  Nietzsche is telling society to do what they love, regardless if it adheres to the status quo.  New and revolutionary ideas do not come from the individuals who grow with the crowd; innovation stems from creativity, differences, and passion.  According to Nietzsche, if you do what you love, then what the people say won’t matter.  You do you sassafras!

Through the good times and through the bad, quotes from truly world changing individuals has proven to be useful in making decisions about the everyday scheme of things.
