Her Campus: What are some of your responsibilities at the radio station?
Mikalah Guyton: As the station manager, I’m basically over the entire station.
HC: What is the most challenging part of running the studio?
MG: Having everyone’s responsibilities on your own is the most challenging part. I work 24/7. If someone needs me at the station at like 2 a.m., I have to come. It can consume my entire schedule.
HC: What so far has been your favorite moment as being the station manager?
Getting the job was my favorite moment. As far as being part of the staff, I love seeing the people that we hire flourish and grow.
HC: Have you hosted your own radio show before? What was it about?
MG: I co-hosted a show my freshman year…a generic rap show.
HC: What are your goals and plans after you graduate?
MG: I would love to do game day operation for a sports team. I want to also be rich, not just financially, but spiritually as well.
HC: Who is your favorite radio broadcaster and why?
MG: Personally, my favorite broadcaster is Ryan Cameron. I met him and I’ve always been a fan.
HC: What is your advice for anyone trying to start a show?
MG: You have to crawl before you walk. It’s not easy. It takes practice. If you have co-hosts, hang out with them outside of the show. Forming a relationship with them and having that chemistry will come through during your show. Also encourage and accept feedback. It will make you better.
HC: What is your advice for women on campus?
MG: Make sure that you aren’t neglecting yourself in any aspect. Make sure that you focus on your goals before anyone else’s.
