“We’re like one of the only campuses that people don’t have to pay to go to [group fitness] classes,” said Sam Sherman, the facilities supervisor at the Mount Mitchell fittness center.
I got a chance to catch up with she and facilities supervisor programmer, Riley Dixon, at some of the local workout spots on campus.
Here are a couple water aerobics classes the other gym, The SRC offers.
Last year, I met the instructor of one of the water aerobics classes when I went to her pilates class every Friday. After chatting with her, she totally dispelled any hesitation I had about the classes, reassuring that they are indeed an excellent workout.
Sam and Riley gave me a little insight into the best times to go to the gym, their favorite fitness classes and other such relevant information.
According to Sam, Mount Mitchell is the least crowded gym on campus. But if you do not want to wait for any equipment, the best times to go would be early in the morning before 10:30 or in between lunch and 4 p.m.
However, if you are closer to the Quinn Center, the times the gym is most crowded range from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the week, and right when the gym opens at 12 p.m. on the weekend, said the Facilities Supervisor Programmer.
Speaking of when the gym is crowded, when I went to talk to Sam, I found out about the belly dancing class. Having recently been into crop tops and trying for abs for three years, my interest was piqued.
“It’s pretty popular,” she said. “We usually have like 25 to 30 people every night.”
25 people is a full fitness class, so I had to ask if she was serious. She said she was, and she would take it herself if she had not been working.
If you do not know what the belly dancing class consists of, the description is below.
According to Riley, the most popular fitness class at the Quinn is Cardio Dance.
“I love HIIT 45 or the App Fitness classes are really good, too,” Sam said.
HIIT 45— If you didn’t know—stands for High Intensity Interval Training. I have been meaning to go to it, but I have been too nervous that I could not handle it. However, after doing P90X, maybe I will try it upon her recommendation.
What will you try, collegiettes?
