On his super strength: I actually started working out with the strength and conditioning coaches in late October. At first I thought it was a joke. … I’m really part of the routine that they do, because they work out during Common Hour. That’s why you always see me in sweats before class.
What he’s currently listening to: Being away from home, I really like listening to Mexican music: norteñas, cumbias, banda. I’m trying to stay connected to my heritage. A few weeks ago I looked up the population… 44% Houston is Latino, and of that 44%, 33% of the Latino population is Mexican. That’s a really big difference coming to Davidson, North Carolina.
On the transition between Houston and Davidson: It’s just really different. I have to adjust. Here it is a very friendly community, and everyone knows everyone and talks to everyone. Houston is a big city—you can get easily lost in the crowd. You’re more to yourself. People are more reserved and skeptical. In the beginning here when people would come up to me and say hi I was a little iffy about it. But now … I’ve adjusted.
His celebrity crush: I don’t really watch that many movies or pay attention to pop culture, … but the first person that pops into my head is Shakira.
On his summer plans: I went back home during Easter for a soccer tryout and I made the team. It’s a lower division team, they play in the fourth tier of the … national premier soccer league. The league starts this Saturday… and ends in the beginning of July. I will be able to play all over Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri. I’m really looking forward to that.
On his dream job: During the summer I’m getting certified as a personal trainer…. I want to start off with personal training, and then build my own company… and build my own personal training style. … Not the usual personal training where people tell you what to do and what machines to go do. I want the personal trainers to have more connection with their clients and for the clients to feel more comfortable [so that they] feel like their hard work isn’t going unnoticed.
His advice for incoming freshmen: Ask for help. Everyone’s here to help. … I learned that fall semester and it’s something I’ve had to work on in the spring semester.
