With a melancholy wave to the school year, our Bean Boots turn to Rainbows, our flannels to summer dresses, our lattes to lemonade, and our darker shades to sun-kissed highlights. Hello Ray Bans, hello summer. Though we invite the changes in temperature, we are forced to say goodbye to Bucknell for a short period (or longer…we miss you already, seniors). But more importantly, we have to depart from our friends—our partners in crime, our neighbors two doors down.
It’s hard, however, to keep those friendships fluid and constant from all corners of the country. We become once again captivated by our home friends, and engrossed in our summer work and internships. And while you may not be able to spend all hours of summer with your best friend across the country, you can throw a little love their way. You love that they let you borrow their shower flip-flops, buy you the Freez, and make Bucknell the place that it is. Keep your friendships alive over the summer with the following tips:
Use social media to your advantage.
We’re on our phones at all hours of the day and night, whether it is Snapchatting, Instagramming, Facebooking, or texting our hearts out. Take advantage of your technology addiction. Snap them your terrible tan lines, Insta throwbacks of you together, shoot them a simple “miss you” text. These things will go a long way in showing that you miss them, and that your friendship, even outside of Bucknell, is beyond worth your time. Even better, create a group text. Even sending one text a day will remind each of you how much you care about each other, and how you wish you were together. The beauty of group texts is the convenience of everyone in one place, as well as the ability to share photos with the touch of a button.
Road trip. Seriously, though.
You’ve seen it done in the movies. Now it’s your turn. Whether you choose to designate a few weekend trips or a weeklong journey, grab your friends and create the ultimate memory. Try spending a few days on Nantucket, Block Island, or exploring the Hamptons. Even go as far as to road trip to Texas, stopping along the way in Nashville and small country towns. And if all else fails, have your friends come to your town, or visit the closest city. Whether it’s a country concert in Pittsburgh, or the 4th of July on Nobadeer in Nantucket, you are guaranteed a good time and a plethora of memories.
It’s easy to take advantage of having friends two doors down. They’re always there for you and easily accessible. Yet, come summer, keep those friendships thriving and keep the memories flowing.Â
