Now that those blistering winter temperatures are behind us (for the most part), it’s time to leave behind old beauty regimens as well. During the winter, I always go through a slump when I get tired of spending the time to do my makeup and hair just to be attacked by Boone winds after stepping foot outside. Walking to class while crying my makeup off was never a fun pasttime, but it happened way too often. Eventually my morning routine was shortened and the most effort I could put in was throwing on a little concealer and mascara. Since temperatures are starting to warm up, it’s given me the motivation to change my boring habits!
Hair:
With the random bursts of rain Boone has been experiencing, I knew I needed to add some essential hair products ‒ and fast! I opted for a leave in conditioner that puts up a tough fight against frizziness. Now instead of feeling like a walking poodle on the way to class in the lovely drizzle that often pays the mountains a visit, my hair is tamed pretty well. I also wanted to add a little protection from the heat since I have fine hair that gets damaged pretty easily in the spring and summer. A thermal/heat protectant is a great option because curling irons, straighteners, and blow dryers take a huge toll on hair normally, but especially in warmer months. The last hair product I added was Moroccan oil, which I was pretty skeptical about trying. I was afraid it would make my hair feel like an oil slick, but used in appropriate amounts, it has made my dry, brittle hair come back to life!
Makeup:
Spring and summer are full of flowers blooming and tons of color in general. I was inspired to try out a makeup area that I’ve never ventured in before: the realm of lipstick. As a fair skinned redhead, lip products are pretty intimidating because so many seem like they’d look bizarre on me. However, after extensive hours searching blogs and Pinterest for tips on finding the right shades, I’ve become hooked on buying it! Transitioning from dark winter shades to brighter and warmer hues of lip products is just what I needed to get my beauty routine a jumpstart. Changing up one part of my beauty routine led to changing other parts as well. I added several shades of blush and highlighter to my makeup bag and on days when I feel a little washed out, I dab on just enough to give my face a nice rosy look.
Skin:
As mentioned before, I am pretty fair skinned. Self-tanner has become one of my new best friends, and it’s taken a few different types of lotion to find the perfect one for me. It gives my skin tone a subtle glow without the harmful effects of actually tanning. Since sunscreen is usually something I have close by during the summer, it was important that I find other beauty products with sunscreen in them. I’ve switched my daily facial moisturizer to one that has 15 SPF in it, and I recently discovered one with 50 SPF in it! Not everyone needs a high amount like that, but protecting your skin from any damage you can is key. My last change up in my skincare routine was my deodorant, which sounds weird but let’s face it: it has to be done for the sake of the general public. Okay that’s an exaggeration, but it’s common knowledge that with warmer weather, walking across campus on warm days means we all get a little grosser than normal. This is why I started using a motion activated antiperspirant. I keep this along with a travel sized body fragrance in my backpack for those days after P.E. when I feel like I need a little refreshing.
Overall, transitioning from a winter routine to a spring and summer one has been pretty easy. It just requires a little focus on what you feel like you’re lacking. Sometimes if you’re unsure about whether a product will work for you, it’s best to try sample sizes of it if they’re offered. There are now websites that allow you to look at thousands of product reviews, so do your research before purchasing so you get the most for your money! If you’re hesitant about changing up your makeup, check out beauty counters and ask store associates for any tips they may have. Sometimes they’ll be able to let you sample products or test them out at the store, which is great for indecisive people like me! Whatever ways you decide to revamp your regimen, do it with confidence! If it makes you feel great, then others will definitely notice your positive attitude.
