10. Grease
Though most of you reading having probably already watched this one, I couldn’t not put it on the list. Romance, drama, kitschy dance numbers… basically, this movie has it all.
9. Footloose
If you’ve seen the modern version, you’re about halfway there, but nothing beats the original Kevin Bacon flick. A conservative town with a ban on dancing faces the wrath of a dance-crazed new teen and the rhythmic rebellion he heads. If that doesn’t scream Academy Award Winner, I don’t know what does.
8. Sixteen Candles
Molly Ringwald plays the painfully average high schooler, whom we can all relate to, on her quest to catch the eye of the hottest guy in school. Pair that with a freakish foreign exchange student and you have the movie gold that is Sixteen Candles.
7. Pretty in Pink
This time, Ringwald plays the nerdy high schooler getting the popular guy to love her and his pretentious friends to like her. Similar to Sixteen Candles, only a bit more heartwarming and kid friendly: a must-see.
6. Pretty Woman
The classic tale of the city hooker falling in love with the wealthy business man… wait, what? Julia Roberts plays quirky Vivian on her rollercoaster romance with reserved Edward. A classic romance with a not-so-classic plot line… ummmm, yes please!

5. You’ve Got Mail
Honestly, it hurts my heart to know how many people in our generation do not know what this movie is. Before people like the “Craigslist Killer,” it wasn’t quite so taboo to meet someone online. This movie follows the romance of two smitten chat-roomers and the way they unknowingly cross each other’s paths almost every day in the real world. Love, love, love this movie!!!
4. The Breakfast Club
This is the story of five completely different high school students in detention and how, with the help of a particularly mean teacher, they learn that they might have something in common after all. Another Molly Ringwald film… she sure likes to touch on those high school stereotypes, doesn’t she? Nonetheless, a WONDERFUL movie!
3. When Harry Met Sally
This movie. Ugh, I don’t even know how to begin describing how wonderful it is. Two strangers go from hating each other, to being friends, to falling in love. Such a cute movie, and it’s got humor to boot! Trust me when I say that once you watch this movie, you’ll never look at modern day rom-coms the same way. Oh, and did I mention the classic (or should I say orgasmic) breakfast diner scene?
2. Dirty Dancing
In theory, this movie should be so incredibly cheesy… yet, IT IS AMAZING. Set in the 1960’s, this movie touches on women’s suffrage and class divides, yet it’s romantic somehow. Watch Baby and Johnny rock the traditional world of Kellerman’s resort with their crazy-kid dance skills. I don’t know what it is with ’80s movies and dancing, but I can’t say I mind it.
1. Sleepless in Seattle
One of my all-time favorite movies… ever, of all time. A love story that manages to suck you in despite the fact that the lovers don’t actually know each other for a majority of the movie. It is too hard to explain, so it looks like you’re going to have to watch it and find out for yourself…
And now I leave you with a gif from the infamous When Harry Met Sally scene… you’re welcome.
