Meet Jessica Gomez! This Neuroscience major hailing from Pacoima, CA is one of the funniest, coolest, and all around awesome Domers (and dining hall buddies) ever. When she’s not encouraging everyone including the campus squirrels to join coro primavera, working at the huddle, or pouring over bio lab notes, she can usually be found cracking some seriously good puns (or, you know, taking pity on her flex point-less friends, did I mention she was awesome?). Ladies and gentlemen, Jessica!
Name: Jessica Gomez
Dorm: Ryan Hall
Hometown: Pacoima, CA
Major: Neuroscience with a double minor in Poverty Studies and Latino Studies
Extracurricular activities:Â Triple C Mentoring, Red Cross Club, LSA, American Cancer Society
Use three adjectives to describe yourself: Hilarious, Trustworthy, Honest      Â
In the epic battle between North and South Dinning Hall, which is better and why?
South because that’s where I eat so it’s automatically better.
Last song you listened to?
Never Say Never by The Fray
Favorite movie and why?
Angels in the Outfield because I felt that I could really relate to it when I was growing up. I really loved how it showed that God is always there and listening to our problems. I also loved how the movie showed that sometimes we don’t get what we want because God has something better in mind for us.
Least favorite movie and why?
The Neighbors because I found it disgustingly crude and made me puke inside a little bit.
Who would you consider your role model?
My grandfather. He showed me everything that was good in the world and has always been an extremely kind and generous man. He was very religious and wise and I am glad that he was able to pass down so much to me. I can only hope to be half as wonderful as he is.
What would your dream job be?
A priest or a magician. But I can’t be a priest since I was born a girl and being a magician doesn’t pay the bills. My realistic dream job is to be a chiropractor because everyone in my family has back problems and can’t afford adequate medical care. I hope that by being able to be a chiropractor I can both work to fix people’s back issues and to also volunteer in organizations where I can put my skills to good use for people who do not have adequate health care to treat their ailments.
You are super involved in LFR (Latino Freshman Retreat), can you tell us what that’s like?
Yes! It was a wonderful experience. I was able to collaborate with some wonderful people and was able to have a “familia” on campus where we were basically each other’s home away from home. As a family, we went to tons of events together like going to the zoo or celebrating each other’s birthdays by going to the movies.
Why should freshmen do LFR?
It’s such a great experience and I am a wonderful person to get to know. I love making friends and I absolutely adore making people laugh. Aside from me, LFR usually takes place at a camp that has tons of things to do such as kayaking, mini golf, archery, and we have many other fun things that we do over at camp, but I wouldn’t want to spoil it all for the freshmen. Please come, though it’ll be a wonderfully great time!
What’s the term that you use to determine food that is off the charts bad?
I call it a Sheen F, also known as a Quadruple F minus.
How do you survive being a Neuroscience major and doing the 1 million things you usually do?
I usually pretend I don’t have work until the absolute last minute. Then I start to panic and the fear of failure really motivates me to get it all done at once. I find that that’s when all the creativity happens because I get better scores on assignments that I do last minute than the assignments I do in advance.
You’re moving from Ryan to Lewis next semester, why?
I find that most of my friends are in Lewis and since it tends to be the more STEM dorm, I’ll find people who I have classes with and will probably be able to connect better with people there. Also, it’s very close to Stepan (that’s where I have most of my 8am exams) and I find that being 5 minutes away from it will allow me more time to sleep than the 20min walk I have from Ryan.
What’s the best part about ND?
I really love all the free events that occur on campus. Whether it be free shirts, the hockey games, or U Can Paint 2 at Legends, I feel like there is always something fun to do on campus for free. It really serves to be a great destresser and a great way to hang out with people than just having a meal with them.
What’s the worst part about ND?
The snow kind of kills me. I’m from California and I’d never heard of a “wind chill” before, so every winter here my heart cries out for the sun.
Favorite memory you’ve made at Notre Dame?
(MEETING GABBY!!) I’ve had so many great memories here it’s hard to narrow it down, but if I had to pick one, I’d say my most recent favorite memory was going to Appalachia over spring break. I met some really amazing people and I had a really great time. I feel like I made life-long friends on that expedition. Everyone was really funny and we made so many inside jokes, it was a wonderful experience.
Thanks Jessica!
