Penn State P.O.W.E.R. (Progressing Our Women Through Empowerment and Reverence) participated in the SlutWalk 2015 this past Thursday in an effort to spread knowledge of Sexual Assault Awareness month.
According to the organization, the SlutWalk is a, “transnational movement of protest marches that began in Toronto, Canada February of 2011. During these protests, participants rally against the idea of excusing rape by the aspects of a woman’s appearance and call for an end to rape culture.”
P.O.W.E.R. sought to bring this message to Penn State’s campus by conducting a march at noon that stretched from West Commons to the Life Sciences Building. The participants held provocative signs and some even donned risquĂ© clothing pieces to help express the prevalence of victim blaming and the skewed culture that exists surrounding the topic of sexual assault. Though the crowd may have been small, the organization succeeded in bringing light to in an important issue both here at Penn State and nationwide.  Â
