Campus Celebrity: Freshman Star, Amy Enright

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at UW Lax chapter.

This girl is a multiple-time State Champion, Regional Champion, National Championships qualifier, first place All-Around gymnast in both the John Zuerlein Invitational at UW-Sout as well as the Gershon/McLellan Invitational here at UW-L and more. The list goes on. Most recently her team won Nationals and she was chosen as an alternate for the NCAA D1 Women’s Gymnastics Regional Championship at Iowa State University. What’s more is she is only a freshman in College. Give it up for this week’s Campus Celebrity, Amy Enright! I couldn’t think of anyone who deserves it more.

Hometown: Lake Elmo, MN

Major/minor: Major : Biology- Cellular and Molecular Concentration.  Minors : Spanish and Chemistry

Class standing: Freshman

How long have you been in Gymnastics? 15 years (started when I was 3)

What events do you specialize in?  I train and compete All-Around (all four events – vault, bars, beam and floor). My best event is bars.

How did it feel to be selected as an alternate for last weekend’s NCAA Division I Women’s Gymnastics Regional Championship at Iowa State University?

It was an honor to be selected as an alternate for the NCAA D1 Regional Championship.  I was excited and incredibly proud to have this opportunity to represent UW-L!

Tell me about this experience and what was involved.

As the alternate bars specialist, I was next in line to compete on that event if the qualifying bars specialist were unable to (the qualifying bars specialist was the gymnast with the highest regional qualifying score on bars that was not already a member of a qualifying team or participating in the all-around competition).  Although I didn’t compete, I did have the opportunity to travel down to Iowa State for the competition on Saturday.  It was a great experience and a fun day of watching gymnastics!

What other gymnastics achievements have you earned?

In club I was a multiple-time State Champion, Regional Champion and National Championships qualifier.  This year, I took first All-Around in the John Zuerlein Invitational hosted at UW-Stout and at the Gershon/McLellan Invitational here at UWL.  At Nationals I earned All-America honors in the All-Around competition and on Bars, and I was a part of our National Championship-winning team!

How did it feel to win the NCGA Championship with your UWL team a couple weeks ago?

Winning Nationals as a team was an absolutely amazing and surreal experience.  It was incredible to see all the work that we had put in all season long come out when it mattered most.  The championship itself was exciting and high-energy, and it was so fulfilling to come together as a team and put together a great meet!  It took several days for the reality of the win to really sink in…we were definitely on cloud nine!

What goals do you have as a gymnast and as a team?

Individually, I want to learn some new skills to put in my routines in the future and continue making improvements on the skills I already have.  As a team, we’ll be striving for continued success within our conference and on the national stage.

What does it take to be a gymnast?

There are two sides to being a gymnast: the physical and the mental.  Physically, gymnastics takes strength, balance, flexibility and air sense.  Gymnasts also need to be mentally tough – they need to be dedicated to pushing themselves to be better every day, determined to get back up when they fall (literally) and able to perform at their best under pressure.

Who is your biggest supporter?

My parents are my biggest supporters.  They have driven me to and from gymnastics practice day in and day out for years, encouraged me whenever I was having a bad day and cheered me on at nearly every meet I have competed in throughout my career.  I wouldn’t be where I am today without their amazing support!

Are you involved with anything else outside of school and gymnastics?

I am involved in undergraduate research and have coached for the Jr. Eagles gymnastics program on campus.  This year, I have also volunteered at the Gundersen Medical Foundation Steppin’ Out in Pink walk, Kid’s Night Out and Veteran’s Day Breakfast.  Additionally, I will be participating in the Be a Part, Reach a Heart service trip to Chicago for first-year students this weekend.

Where do you see yourself in 5 to 10 years?

I’m definitely still figuring out where I want to be in 5 to 10 years, but I do envision myself going to grad school, getting a job and starting to make a home for my future family.

How does it feel to be Campus Celebrity?

I’m honored to be Campus Celebrity!  The campus and community support for UW-L Gymnastics this season has been wonderful!
