Hey collegiettes! This week you’ll get to learn a little more about Vareesha Khan. She’s artistic, fun, and very involved on campus! (Sneak Peak: She’s the AUS Equity Commissioner and a contributor on the 1000 Faces of Montreal project, just to name a few)
The Basics
Name: Vareesha Khan
Year: U2
Faculty/Major: Arts/ Political Science & English — Cultural Studies major
Hometown: Troy, Michigan
Hobbies: When I’m not at jobs, classes, or in meetings, I’m usually either writing, exploring abandoned building, painting oil/acrylic on canvas.
The Love Life
Relationship Status: Single and too busy to mingle
3 things you look for in a partner: I would like them to be a multi-vitamin not a drug, they can talk about anything and everything, they have to be pursuing a purpose in life.
Your best feature/quality: Being self-aware
Fanta Kamara for Her Campus McGill (HC): It is International Women’s Month. What do you think is the most important step women have taken this year or at all?
Vareesha Khan (VK): This year I feel women have really vocalized their personal experiences and banded together to support one another.
HC: Which issues/steps do you think still need to be addressed?
VK: I believe we still need to recognize the critical juncture of class with sex, and how sexism is strongly tied to poverty. To end sexism, you have to overcome poverty, and poverty is created by capitalism. Mostly looking beyond the scope of problems existing in developed countries.
HC: Who do you find most inspirational and why?
VK: I try not to have a hero to look up to. I’d rather be surrounded by amazing people. I’m most inspired by the best version of me I can become, because it pushes me to get to her.
HC: Now cycling back to you. How are you involved on campus?
VK: I sit on AUS council as an Equity Commissioner, and also run the Equity Committee. I’m an editor for the McGill International Review, as well as the Scrivener Creative Review. I’m working on the Visages de Montreal project, in addition to being an event photographer for the Bull & Bear. I’m part of the SSMU event planning committee SSPN, and am organizing a TedX conference for next year.
HC: If you had to pick one, which activity would you say was you favorite and why?
VK: Equity would have to be the most fulfilling, because I was able to build precedent in the portfolio, gain experience being on council, and face the challenges of having a public persona.
