New Year’s Resolution: Check In

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at IU chapter.

January is all about new beginnings. This is the time to quit smoking, get fit, start saving more money, or whatever else your new year’s resolution may be. HerCampus is here to check in. It’s March, that’s two whole months since resolutions were made.

How is it going?

Are you still on the bandwagon? Great! If not, here are some tips to get back on and stay motivated.

1.     Get rid of the bad

This works for a variety of new year’s resolutions. Trying to lose weight? Throw out all of your junk food. Yes, it may seem like you’re basically throwing out money, but in the end you’ll thank yourself for it when you don’t drunk eat an entire bag of pizza rolls.

Trying to get more sleep during the week? Get your work done early so you can come home and relax. Many college students attribute sleep problems to their phones. Studies have proven that computer, phone, and tablet screens activate senses in your brain that make it think it’s daytime, so you won’t want to go to sleep. So make a no phone in/by bed rule. If you’re really committed, set a hard no screens an hour before bed rule. Try it just one night and you’ll definitely feel the difference the next morning!

2.     Remind yourself why you made the resolution

After a couple of months, it’s easy to get tired of trying so hard and forget why you made your new year’s resolution in the first place. This is the time that if you want to keep going with your resolution and turn it into reality you need to kick it into high gear. Whatever your resolution may be, make reminders for yourself everyone. Post sticky notes around your apartment on your mirror, refrigerator, laptop, or wherever you look all the time. Write your new year’s resolution in your planner. Put reminders on your phone and have it notify you at your trouble times. For example, your resolution is to get fit and you plan to go to the gym everyday at 4. Set a notification for 3:30 everyday to remind yourself and get out the door!

3.     Look at the progress you’ve made

Self-reflection is key during this process, and hey big changes take time. So look back and think about how far you’ve come since January. Are you where you want to be? Is there anything else you should be doing? Stay positive. Your progress will keep you motivated and looking towards the new and improved future you.

New Year’s Resolutions are hard, but hopefully HerCampus can help keep you motivated, collegiettes. Stick with it! You’re strong, beautiful, and you can do anything you put your mind to.
