I don’t know about you, but as soon as the temperature drops below -20, the skin on my hands gives up all hope of trying to retain any moisture. If you can relate then you’ll know that it becomes painful to even wash your hands and they feel as rough as sandpaper. Sometimes the skin can even crack and start to bleed! Desperate to get that baby’s bottom feeling again, I set out to find some of the best hand creams to combat dry hands this winter.
#1: Hemp Hand Protector
Not only does this cream smell absolutely delightful, but it also provides instant relief to those scaly hands. The Hemp Hand Protector contains Community Trade hemp seed oil that helps to soften and protect your hands from the harsh weather. This hand cream is also very affordable, only $20 at The Body Shop. The website claims that the cream will also keep your hands moisturized even after washing them. Now, I find that most of the time moisturizers make this claim but it never works, so I had to try – I just ran to the sink with the Hemp cream on and I can confirm that my hands still felt silky smooth.
#2: O’Keeffe’s Working Hands
If this cream doesn’t moisturize your skin I don’t know what will! O’Keeffe’s Working Hands moisturizing cream works to help prevent your skin from more water loss while also working to draw moisture in. You know this is heavy-duty stuff because you won’t find it at your average beauty store. No, no. You have to get this cream from Canadian Tire ($8.99) or the Running Room ($9.99). If in the end you are not satisfied, then the company does offer a money back guarantee.
#3: Glysomed Hand Cream
The Glysomed hand cream contains glycerine, silicone, chamomile, and antioxidant properties to help restore and lock in moisture while also soothing irritated skin. As their website puts it, it’s like putting on an invisible glove to help protect your hands. This is also a great option for anyone sensitive to smells because there is a fragrance-free version of the cream. Glysomed hand cream is very easy to find at most local drugstores, like Shoppers, for under $6.00.
#4: DIY
If you prefer to stick to natural ingredients or just enjoy DIY projects, then skip the stores all together and make your own hand cream! One of the benefits to making your own cream is that you can personalize it by making it smell and look however you want. You can find tons of recipes for hand creams online, like this one for example:
Ingredients:
3 tablespoons beeswax pellets (which you can get at Wal-Mart)
¼ cup coconut oil
½ cup avocado oil or other oil of choice (sweet almond, olive or jojoba make great choices, too)
2 tablespoons shea butter
optional: 20 drops essential oil of choice
