Ole Fit Athlete of the Week: Shelby Ahrendt

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St Olaf chapter.
Meet this week’s featured athlete, Shelby! She’s a sophomore nordic skier, who is also a Physics and Art double major.

1. Hometown: Stillwater, MN – home of da ponies!

2. Sport/Position: I’m a nordic skiier, so my ‘position’ normally involves being on snow.

3. Favorite music to work out: I’m actually really into listening to podcasts when I workout. Otherwise, John Mayer all the way.

4. Best sports memory: My best sports memory was actually at State for tennis my senior year. It was down to my partner and I in a doubles match to determine the fifth place team, and we won in a tiebreaker. It was super silly, because we were up by a bunch and then let our opponents catch up. So, the tie break was super suspenseful, but we pulled off the big W; our team got 5th. We were SO stoked!

5. Favorite part of playing on a college sports team: A sense of community, a shared passion for working hard and love for that happy post workout tired-ness when all is right in the world. Also, I’m SUPER proud of our broomball team, Landslide, that became the newly crowned non-competitive league champions a few weeks ago!!

6. Inspirational athlete?: Jessie Diggins, a former Stillwater skiier who’s now on the U.S. Ski team and actually just posted the highest United States individual finish EVER with her second place on TUESDAY in the world champs!!!! Also, Sasha Digulian is a 22 year old professional rock climber who’s done some pretty incredible stuff.

7. Any pregame rituals or superstitions?: I used to have this pair of really ugly earrings that I would wear for every ski race, and I thought they were the secret to my success. Then I lost them…and the world went on, so I guess they weren’t really much of a luck charm.

8. Favorite food after a hard practice: Cottage cheese with peaches, or chocolate pudding.

9. Other extracurriculars or activities you’re involved in on campus: I work at the climbing wall and really enjoy rock climbing. I also help with the night astronomy star-watching sessions, so if you ever end up at sto grow when the telescopes are up, we’ll probably be running them!

10. Any sports-related advice?: Do what you love and love what you do. LIFE IS GOOD!
