Every once in a while, we all like to pamper ourselves with a trip to the salon to get our nails done. But why spend the extra cash when you could easily re-create salon perfect nails from the comfort of your own home? Just follow these tips and tricks.
Step 1: Remove the evidence
To begin with, make sure you remove all traces of that old chipped nail-polish you have on with an acetone free nail-polish remover and a cotton pad.
Step 2: Shape it up
Next, grab a nail file and buffer to shape and smooth your nails into the desired shape. You could go for any of these popular nail shapes to suit your taste!
Just be sure to file your nails in the same direction using smooth strokes – A back and forth motion will leave your nails brittle and prone to chipping!
Step 3: Pamper time
Now here’s the step that really gives your hands and nails that ‘fresh out the salon’ feel. Soak your nails and cuticles in a bowl of warm water mixed with a few drops of either cuticle oil, or even baby oil, for at least 10 minutes. After the time is up, rub a tiny bit of the oil over your cuticles and use a cuticle pusher to gently push them back. Finish by wiping off the excess oil using warm water and a washcloth.
Step 4: Base layer
Once your nails are prepared, we can begin painting! But before applying any colour, be sure to add a base coat. This will not only prevent any nail polish from staining your nails but good base coats can also strengthen your nails and helps your polish to last longer.
Step 5: Paint like a pro
Get painting! Choose the colour you want and apply the polish onto your nail in three smooth strokes – starting with the center and then either side of the nail. Try to apply thin coats from the base to the tip and make sure the first coat is dry before you move onto the second – two should be enough!
Step 6: Finishing touches
Finish off your nails with a topcoat to prolong the life of your manicure and give your nails a smooth professional look!
