Do you have a passion for cooking? Would you love to learn how to make some healthy food alternatives, but don’t really have the recipes or money to spend? Well Collegiettes, FSU Campus Recreation has the solution to your cooking needs. There are healthy cooking classes available each semester. Each of these cooking classes are open for a limited number of students, and the registration window normally opens one week before the actual cooking class is scheduled. All of these yummy classes are normally held in the fourth floor food lab in the William-Johnson Building (WJB) at 7 PM. Each class is around two hours.
So why should you participate in these classes? It’s obvious really:
• These classes are completely free for FSU students. So take advantage of this opportunity!
• It’s a great study break and way to relieve some stress.
• You’ll get to learn how to create healthy alternatives to your favorite meals.
• You’ll meet other people who love food just as much as you do.
• Eating the finished product is always rewarding.
Still not so convinced? Don’t worry that will change! Here’s a short recap of the cooking class on February 12th. The topic was Making Your Relationships Sweeter: Desserts and Discussions on Love. This was a Valentine’s Day tailored cooking class where students were encouraged to bring their Valentine and cook with them. Couples, roommates, and friends gathered together to get their hands sticky and their tummies filled with the treats they made.
Three sweet—yet more healthy than your average Twix bar—treats were on the cooking schedule. All students got to make…
Banana Foster Al La Mode! (Caramelized Bananas, Almonds, Honey, and Ice Cream)
Peanut Butter Cups! (Not your average cup, a whole lot healthier with no additive sugars.)
Chocolate Dipped Oranges! (A simple twist to your mid-day snack with a chocolate touch.)
None of these desserts contained any additional sugar in their recipes. Honey and the occasional maple syrup were used if students wanted their peanut butter cups a little sweeter. The class was partnered with University Counseling to bring a little touch of Valentine sweetness. Students were given a survey and interacted in a conversation on different types of love.
Helena Marklin, English-Editing, Writing, and Media major, and Spencer Gould, Geology major, posed with great accomplishment at the end of the cooking class on Feburary 12th.
“I like that we are able to make things we don’t normally make at home. It’s free, good for you, and it’s an awesome way to meet people,” said senior Marklin.
“We were blown away by the recipes that they gave us,” added senior Gould.
Campus Rec’s main goal is to get students to find a balance in their eating habits. You can eat a cookie, but it’s wiser to eat only two instead of the whole box. Life is too short to stick to a diet where you only eat veggies. Sometimes you need to give into your cravings just to make yourself a little happier and less crazy on your tough days!

The next cooking class will be on Pre- and Post-Workout Snacks, on Thursday, February 26th. This cooking class sounds perfect for those of you who love working out.
