5 Things In Hollywood We’re Still Not Over

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

Hollywood can have a huge effect on our culture. It starts and ends new trends such as dance moves or fashion. Tabloids and magazines give us interesting stories to read and gossip about one week, and then move on to the next. However, there are some things you can never let go of or un-see. Here are some of the biggest things in Hollywood we have never been able to get over:

5.) Miley’s VMA Performance

The year 2013 was huge for the pop princess. This was the year that Miley Cyrus succeeded at shedding her Disney “good girl” image and became an unforgettable icon. With the release of her controversial album, Bangerz, Ms. Cyrus received a lot of scrutiny for her glorification of partying and drugs in her song “We Can’t Stop,” and her “nude” footage in her music video for the song “Wrecking Ball.” However, shortly before the release of her album, Miley gave a performance that will go down in history as one of the most iconic performances of all time at the 2013 VMA’s. The pop star sang “We Can’t Stop” and then hopped right into a performance of Robin Thicke’s jam, “Blurred Lines.” The twerk seen around the world against Robin Thicke jump started the booty-shaking club move and created a worldwide sensation. We twerked our way into 2014, and are STILL twerking right into 2015. You go girl!

4.) Heath Ledger’s Death

Heath Ledger had a promising 2008 ahead of him; not only was he one of the hottest stars in Hollywood, he also starred as The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film, “The Dark Knight.” Critics raved at the Aussie star’s compelling performance, and praised him at how involved he became in the character. Sadly, on 22 January 2008, Heath was found unconscious in his bed by his housekeeper and his masseuse in his Manhattan apartment. It was later reported his death was caused by an overdose of prescription drugs. He was nominated and won the Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for his role as The Joker later on, and his family passed his trophy to his daughter, Matilda. Fans everywhere are still saddened by this, but he will always be remembered for playing some of the most critically acclaimed roles in Hollywood.

3.) Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt’s Divorce

Although it’s almost been 10 years since their divorce, Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt’s high profile marriage and divorce is still seen on the cover of tabloids everywhere. It’s no secret that our favorite “Friends” star was heartbroken after her divorce from the hunk. I mean, they were basically considered Hollywood’s power couple. Shortly after their divorce, Brad was photographed with Angelina Jolie and admitted that he had fallen in love with her on the set of “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” For years, the media has reported on possible tension between the two leading ladies, but after time has passed, they have made amends. Jennifer has stated she has moved on, but we’re glad to hear that Jen and Brad still keep in contact. Sure, we love Brangelina, but we have to admit that we’re still a little heartbroken over the couple we had faith in.

2.) Leo STILL Hasn’t Won An Oscar

This steamy and dreamy actor has been nominated more times than we can count, and STILL hasn’t won. He has played unforgettable roles in films such as “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?,” “Titanic,” “Revolutionary Road” and “The Wolf Of Wall Street.” Of course, with any awards ceremony, there is stiff competition, but there have been several indications where we thought Leo was going take the prize (Titanic maybe?). Anyhow, Mr. DiCaprio still has one of the most stable fan bases (mostly ladies), and we certainly still love him. We continue hold on to hope that this famous hunk will win the Oscar he deserves. We believe in you Leo! Now, draw us like one of your French girls!

1.) Britney and Justin’s Denim Apparel

Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake were (and still are) two of the biggest pop stars in the music industry. It also happened to be that these teen idols and childhood sweethearts were madly in love with each other. These two were photographed everywhere together and were very open in interviews about their love for one another. One thing we will never be able to get over, however, is their outfit choice at the 2001 American Music Awards. Matching denim outfits. Really? We’ve never been able to forgive or forget these two for this fashion faux pas. Justin, you’re too steamy for that cowboy hat anyways! Side note: we’re still upset about these two breaking up!

New trends and gossip form everyday, but when will it be time to move on from these events that shaped pop culture?
