Another week another awards show and we are glad to say they keep getting better and better. The 25th of January marked the 20th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. As one of the many, high profile awards night that lead up to the Oscars it is no surprise that some of the industry’s most famous faces were in attendance.
Break out film Birdman took home one of the biggest awards of the night, Outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture. There has been a lot buzz around this film and its all-star cast, with a lot of people tipping it for best film at the Oscars.
The British nominees did us proud with Downton Abbey taking home the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Eddie Redmayne also won the Outstanding performance by a male actor in a motion picture for his portrayal of Steven Hawking in The Theory Of Everything.
Patricia Arquette added to her award streak that the ceremony by taking home the award for female actor in a supporting role for her role in Boyhood. The film has received positive reviews for its soul inspiring and authentic representation of growing up and adolescents. The film was made over 12 years and sees main actor Ellar Coltrane grow up on screen.
One of the most tear jerking moments had to be when How to Get Away With Murder star, Viola Davis took the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series. When accepting the award the actress thanked the show’s producers for “for thinking that a sexualized, messy, mysterious woman could be a 49-year-old dark-skinned African-American woman who looks like me.”
The Lifetime Achievement Award went to screen veteran Debbie Reynolds. Probably best known for her performances in Singing in the Rain and The Unsinkable Molly Brown the actress was honoured with this prestigious award for her 66 year long career.
The night was full or magic, winners and glamour which made it an enjoyable ceremony to watch. Congratulations to all the winners (see the full list below.)
