Although NU produces a lot of plays every year, The Dolphin Show is one of the biggest productions. This year the musical is Titanic. Max Rein plays Thomas Andrews, the leading architect of the Titanic ship.Â
How did you get involved in Titanic?
I had the awesome opportunity of working with Brendan “Baby” Flynn last year on Next to Normal. Not only did we become great friends, but he also claimed the spot of director of the Dolphin Show’s Titanic. I auditioned for the show and I was lucky enough to have been cast by him again. Being involved as a cast member of this show has been amazing so far and I can’t wait to see the show go up in the next week.
What is your favorite part about your role?
Thomas Andrews is the designer of the ship, so he is a critical thinker and planner. He pays attention to detail, and really expresses passion in his work. I admire that a lot and try to apply his thinking in my own life. Sometimes he does a bit of overthinking though, which I think is his downfall, and I can certainly relate to that more often than not.
What previous experience do you have in theater?
As I mentioned before, I was in Next to Normal last year here at NU. I have also been involved with the Waa-Mu Show for the past two years. My first claim to fame at Northwestern was Ecclesiazusae directed by Aaron Simon Gross, one of my favorite people on this campus. Before all of this though, I have pretty much done theater my entire life. I did a ton of shows back home throughout middle school and high school, so it has always been something important to me.
Outside of theater, what do you like to do?
I really love going to movies. Watching movies in the theater is like my dream escape. On campus, I am in THUNK a cappella and also a member of Phi Delt. Singing and chilling with the boys are big for me.
Who is your theater crush?
Although I have a special place in my heart for Garrett “Daddy” Baer, I’d have to say that I am crushing on Meghan McCandless because she is an amazing talent. And she made me cry twice during Little Women in the fall.
